KRIMES WINS RACE, MONTIETH CLAIMS FIRST TRACK TITLE IN LINCOLN 410 SPRINTS

Frankie Herr becomes 4th winner in 4 events in super sportsman; Ort & Heckman 305 sprint winners

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/30/08 - There’s a new track champion at Lincoln Speedway.

And the driver known as "the Edge" did it without a single win in 2008. Brian Montieth capped off his championship season with a fourth-place finish in Saturday night’s 25-lap 410 sprint car feature Saturday night.

Though he has not yet visited victory lane this season, Montieth’s fourth-place finish was his ninth top five finish and 19th top ten finish of ‘08.

It was a rough night for the four drivers still in points contention for the Lincoln title. Montieth was the only driver who finished high enough in his heat to gain a handicapped spot at the front of the feature field, and he started tenth. Both 1996 champ Cris Eash and 10-time track champ Fred Rahmer qualified in their heats, but missed the handicapping and started 16th and 19th, respectively. Niki Young finished fifth in the consolation event and missed qualifying by one spot. But he made the field when Pat Cooper scratched from the feature.

A flip by sixth-starting Chad Jumper in turn two of the opening lap also took out the YTI Career Institute #25 of Chad Layton and damaged the sprinter of defending champ Rahmer. Several other cars went to the pits during the red, including Young. Rahmer was able to report out before the race re-started, and started in the exact same 19th starting spot.

Once the race got underway, Mechanicsburg’s Bill Stine took the lead and paced the field the first eight laps before doing a wheelie exiting turn four and collecting the Pearl Technologies #9 of Craig Keel, who was setting up for the pass and struck the inside front stretch guardrail. Keel was done for the night, and Alan Krimes, who started sixth after the initial red flag, assumed the runner-up spot.

Krimes made quick work of Unlimited Fencing #71X on the restart, grabbing the lead on the restart and leading the rest of the way. For Krimes, is was his second win of the year and the sixth of his Lincoln career.

Fifth-starting Cody Darrah crossed second .78 second behind, with Jim Siegel third, Montieth fourth, and Josh Wells fifth. Completing the top ten were 16th-starting Doug Esh, Greg Hodnett, Eash, Aaron Ott, and Scott Geesey.

"I hated to spoil the party for those guys in the top-four in points," said Krimes with a big smile on his face in victory lane. "It was a rough night...the track was one groove, not my kind of track that’s for sure. Once I got out front there and I saw Cody on the outside I figured the top was the best place to be, but, my car just didn’t feel comfortable up there at all. It was loose and bouncing all around."

"We were battling real hard there and came up on lapped traffic and I knew that was going to get interesting. Luckily I got under the #4 car there on the white flag lap and that sealed the deal, hung on, and got the win."

The championship was largely determined on the ninth-lap restart, when Cris Eash tried to go high on turns one and two and was forced to the wall while Montieth drove under Eash into fifth. Until he recovered, Eash found himself in eighth-place, and that’s where he finished.

Young, who fought mechanical problems all night, dropped from the field on lap 13, and Rahmer pulled into the infield on lap 16.

Montieth’s point total at night’s end was 7,225, twenty-five points better than Eash (7,200). Rahmer was third with 7,135 points and Young’s final point total was 7,110.

"Crew chief Scotty Zellers told me to wing it up tonight and if we have to put another one together for tomorrow we’d put another one together...I knew Jerry (Parrish his car owner) didn’t want to hear that in the heat race, but I had to go," said the outwardly happy 2008 Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Champion in victory lane. "When I saw Cris (Eash) get up there in front of me I knew I had to go and at that point we were either going to go out of this place or go forward. I just wasn’t going to give it up tonight."

"We were good enough tonight. It was definitely a handful."

Heats for the 33 "410" Sprints were won by Adam Lawrence, Jumper, AJ Michael, and Keel, with Esh winning the consolation.

Frankie Herr became the fourth different winner in four super sportsman events at Lincoln Speedway in 2008 by winning the crash-marred 25-lap feature.

Herr grabbed the lead from Jay Fannasy on a 13th lap restart and raced away to the convincing victory.

Six cautions and two reds plagued the event which saw four different leaders over the course of 25 laps.

25-lap track record-holder Eric Eckert grabbed the lead from his outside frontrow starting position and held the top spot until he stopped in turn four on lap four. Gregg Foster took over on the restart with Jay Fannasy getting by on lap eight to become the third different leader. Herr, who started 12th, made his race-winning move on a lap 13 restart to become the fourth and final leader.

Fannasy settled for second, with Doug Hendricks third, Dave Berkheimer fourth and Stan Wanner fifth. Completing the top-10 were Dylan Cisney, Jason Fry, 21st-starting Rich Eichelberger, Carmen Perigo Jr., and Mike Enders.

Heats for the 36 Super Sportsman were won by Gary Johnston, Berkheimer, Eckert, and Hendricks, with Rick Barr and Ryan Rupp winning twin consolations.

Chambersburg’s Michael Heckman survived the crash-marred 20-lap regularly scheduled 305 Sprint Feature for his first Lincoln win of 2008.

Heckman assumed the lead on lap 12 when Mark Watkins clipped a lapped car while leading for the second time in as many features on the night. Heckman led the rest of the way, with Todd Spangler crossing second, Andy Haus coming from 12th to finish third, Tyler Bear advancing from 20th starting spot to finish fourth, and Joey Hershey starting 14th to finish fifth. Sixth through tenth were Rod Ort, Bren Comp, Ron Aurand, Jake Waters, and Cliff Connor.

Nathan Gramley was uninjured in a spectacular crash on opening lap of the feature. Gramley vaulted over the back stretch catch fence and wrapped his car in speaker wires.

Heats for the 29 "305" Sprints were won by Ben Naugle, Mike Freet, and Watkins, with Rodney Peters winning the consolation.

Lewisberry’s Rod Ort was a happy winner early in the evening as he claimed the win in the April 26th make-up 305 Sprint feature. Ort, who started fifth, chased polesitter Mark Watkins from the start. On the 13th lap Watkins caught lapped traffic and got entangled in them exiting the fourth turn and spun, handing the lead to Ort. From there Ort held off Heckman over the final laps to take the checkered by 1.14 seconds to become this two-time 305 sprint winner in 2008. Andy Haus finished third, Erin Statler fourth and 20th-starting Tyler Bear fifth. Completing the top-10 were Todd Spangler, Scott Ellerman, Watkins, Craig Laudermilch, and Logan Wagner.

Next Saturday night, September 6th at 7 PM, the Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints will conclude there season-long battle for the coveted Lincoln Speedway track title with a special 358 Sprint Championship event.

Joining them will be the MALCO Landscaping 358 Late Models and the Thundercars whom will be running a regularly scheduled show along with a make-up feature from August 2nd. Gates will open at 5 PM, with racing action getting underway at 7 PM.
