SHAFFER WINS RACE, ROHRBAUGH CLAIMS TITLE IN LINCOLN 358 SPRINTS

Bobby Beard wins Inaugural Grinestaff Memorial, Knaub claims title in Lincoln 358 Late Models;
Gino Comi takes third of year in thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 9/7/08 - In a night of championships, it was York’s Adrian Shaffer leading all 25 laps of the $1,500-to-win 358 Sprint Championship race for his first win of 2008.

And it was West York’s Jeff Rohrbaugh taking home the coveted track Keizer Aluminum Wheels track championship by posting a fourth place finish in the final point race of the season. It was Rohrbaugh’s first ever title in the Pigeon Hills.

Shaffer grabbed the lead from his outside frontrow starting position with polesitter Glenndon Forsythe and fourth-starting Frankie Herr following.

A wild flip by Mike Duncan on the backstretch of the eighth lap stopped the action. Duncan was conscious after the crash, but transported to the trauma center at York hospital with a possible neck injury. No further reports on his condition were available.

On the restart, Herr got around Forsythe to move into second with Rohrbaugh, who started fifth, getting by Forsythe a lap later to move into third.

A Craig Myers flip in turns one and two stopped the action on the 13th lap. Myers was okay.

Shaffer held off Herr on the restart as seventh-starting Aaron Ott passed Rohrbaugh to move into third.

Herr began to pressure Shaffer as they approached lapped traffic on lap 20, but a spin by Danny Dietrich in turn four brought out the caution and gave Shaffer a clear track with five laps to go.

Shaffer then held off Herr and Ott over the final laps to pick up his fifth career win by .91-seconds.

"It’s been getting to where I was starting to run out of tries," said Shaffer in victory lane, "Friday night we started on the front row with Glenndon and he drove away, and I thought it was going to happen again tonight. I’m just glad I got the jump on him and had a clean track the whole race."

Rohrbaugh held off Pat Cannon in the end to finish fourth and in the process claimed the 2008 track title.

"It’s pretty remarkable," said Rohrbaugh of his track title in victory lane, "Lincoln’s tough. Everybody in the top ten except my nephew (Tim Wagaman) missed a race. It’s a tough deal...you have to take your lumps...it’s just unfortunate for Gerard that he had to take his tonight."

"I’m happy to be here," continued Rohrbaugh, "You had 46 cars here tonight, and 30 of them could have won. Adrian did a heck-of-a job tonight...he was taking his lumps in the middle of the summer...and I would like to congratulate him and his team. I told the team that if I won the Lincoln championship I’d retire, but I think we’ll come back and try to defend it next year."

Completing the top-10 were Scott Geesey, Billy Dietrich, Adam Wilt, TJ Stutts, and Nicole Bower.

The night began with Rohrbaugh holding a slim 25-point lead over Gerard McIntyre Jr. and a 190-point advantage over third-place Geesey.

In the first heat, McIntyre was on his way to the win and a potential good starting spot for the 25-lap championship feature, when it all went away on the final lap as his motor exploded out the bottom of the oil pan on the final lap, ending his night and shot at the track title.

And with only a 120-point difference between winning and last place, all Rohrbaugh had to do was start the championship feature and the title was his.

358 Sprint heats were won by Danny Dietrich, Geesey, Dale Hammaker, and Forsythe. Cannon won the B-Main. Fast time in time trials over the 46-car field was set by Aaron Ott with a one-lap time of 14.393-seconds (93.796 MPH).

Former Lincoln thundercar champ Bobby Beard took home the $1,850 winner’s share in the inaugural Chargin’ Charlie Grinestaff Memorial for the 358 late models. The Grinestaff family, with the help of several sponsors, provided $1,000 and Lawrence Chevrolet an extra $100 to the normal $750 to win.

Gene Knaub’s eighth-place finish locked up the 2008 Lincoln track title.

Beard started fourth in the feature event, and watched third-starting Craig Wagaman, seventh-starting Jerry Bard, and ninth-starting Mike Walls duke it out for the lead during the early stages of the race.

Wagaman led lap one and Walls led laps two through nine. Beard got around Wagaman for third on lap five and caught Bard for the runner-up spot on lap nine. One lap later, Beard took the race lead and paced the field the rest of the way.

Walls crossed second, with 12th-starting Tyler Armstrong finishing third, Kyle Lear coming from 24th starting spot to claim the hard-charger $100 bonus and 3-foot high trophy, and Bard settling for fifth. Sixth through tenth were 22nd-starting Ashley Barrett, Fred Harden, Knaub, Matt Nailor, and 19th-starting Dave Sokoloski.

Heats for the 45 "358" Late Models were won by Mike Walls, Nailor, Wagaman, and Cory Hauck. Twin consolations were won by Chaz Walls and Barrett.

Gino Comi caught Danny Beard on lap 16and scored his third win of the year in the 20-lap thundercar feature.

Polesitter Josh Ulrich led the first lap before spinning in turn two of lap two. Danny Beard assumed the race lead and stayed there until yielding to Comi on lap 16.

Eighth-starting Larry Neiderer crossed third, with Sam Gallagher coming from the back after stopping on the track during a caution flag to finish fourth and Brian Walls fifth. Completing the top ten were Justin Mong, Mike Slaybaugh, Will Walls, Mikey Guise, and Brad Shank.

Heats for the 21 Thundercars were won by Mong, Brian Walls, and Comi.

The August 2nd thundercar make-up feature originally scheduled for Saturday night was rescheduled yet again to September 20th.

Next Saturday night, September 13th at 7 PM, Lincoln Speedway will host the 34th Annual Lawrence Chevrolet Sportsman 100. Joining them will be the Street Stocks (Williams Grove Rules) and Thundercars. Gates will open at 5 PM, with racing action getting underway at 7 PM.
