ESH CLAIMS 20TH ANNUAL MANUFACTURERS APPRECIATION RACE

Brian Walls, Doug Bennett thundercar winners

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 9/20/08 - Doug Esh seems to always be at his best when the big money is on the line.

And it was no different at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night, as he drove around polesitter and race-long leader Lucas Wolfe in turns three and four of lap eight and drove away to his fourth win of the year in the $4,000-to-win Hank Gentzler Manufacturers Appreciation Race.

Esh started third when faster timer Wolfe drew the "0" pill for the inversion of the feature field.

He followed Wolfe and second-starting Jim Siegel for the fist five laps before getting by Siegel for the runner-up spot on lap five. It took only three laps for Esh to erase Wolfe’s .75-second lead, and he was one and-a-half seconds in front of Siegel when the only caution of the race came out for a torsion bar on turn two of lap 18.

"We were pretty good all night," said Esh in victory lane, "Dennis (Kohler) had the car real good and Dick (Leach) had the motor running real nice. You know, starting behind Lucas there...he’s run with the best and has become one of the best...I just felt like we had a little bit better car all night long. He was quick in time trials but we were able to race pretty good in the heat race.’

"We didn’t realize we weren’t allowed to put new tires on for the feature, so we ended up putting scuffs on," said Esh, "I wasn’t too comfortable running out there starting third, but it all worked out."

Siegel caught Wolfe for second on lap 10, and ran there the rest of the race, crossing 3.25 seconds behind the Pancho’s Racing Products/Leach family #30.

Ten-time track champ Fred Rahmer came from 13th-starting spot to catch Wolfe for third on lap 20, but couldn’t catch the leaders. Cody Darrah passed Wolfe for fourth on lap 21 and finished there, with Wolfe settling for fifth.

Sixth through tenth were Cris Eash, Niki Young, Justin Henderson in his first-ever Lincoln run, track 2008 Lincoln champ Brian Montieth, and Lance Dewease.

It was Esh’s 21st career win in the Pigeon Hills. Counting the $2,300 prize packages doled out by Hank’s Performance Products to all cars qualifying for the Manufacturers Race and $50 for finishing third in his heat, Esh’s winnings totaled more than $6,300 on the night. The value of manufacturers’ products and services distributed to competitors by Hank’s Performance Products was more than $58,000.

"I think this Gentzler race is awesome," continued Esh, "Hank put the whole thing together and Denise keeps it going. I know she does a ton of work."

After Esh talked in victory lane, Denise Gentzler confirmed there will be a 21st Annual Manufacturers Race at Lincoln in 2009.

Heats were won by Chad Layton, Alan Krimes (driving the Trone Outdoor #39), Brian Leppo, and Darrah. Cory Haas won the B-Main. Fast time in time trials over the 38-car 410 sprint field was set by Lucas Wolfe with a one-lap time of 13.043 seconds(103.504 MPH).

Former Hagerstown standout Doug Bennett picked up his first career Lincoln Speedway Thundercar win in the regularly scheduled 20-lap feature.

Bennett, who started outside the frontrow, grabbed the lead from polesitter Jamie Zentmyer at the drop of the green and then held off a hard-charging Brian Walls from the second lap to the end for the win by 1.32 seconds and became the ninth different winner in thundercar action in 2008.

Justin Mong finished third, Larry Neiderer fourth and Scott Fisher fifth. Completing the top-10 were David Prunkl, Josh Ulrich, Dave Reever Jr., Zentmyer, and Brad Shank.

In the make-up feature from August 2nd Brian Walls grabbed the lead grabbed the lead from outside frontrow starter Mikey Guise on the second lap and held off Danny Beard the entire distance to register his fourth win of 2008.

Point leader Sam Gallagher finished third, Bennett fourth, and Jimmy Combs fifth. Completing the top-10 were Brad Shank, Larry Niederer, Gino Comi, Mike Guise, and Justin Mong.

Heats for the 21 Thundercars were won by Beard, Bennett, and Walls.

Next Saturday night, September 27th, Lincoln Speedway will be dark as Williams Grove hosts its annual Morgan Hughes Williams Grove National Open.

The following Saturday night, October 4th, Lincoln Speedway will hold its 12th Annual Kenny Weld Memorial featuring the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 410 Sprints as they race 40 laps while going after the $5,000 top prize. Joining then will be the thundercars who are still going after precious points in the battle for their track championship which will go down to the final race of the season. Time trials will get underway at 6:30 PM, with gates opening at 4:30 PM.
