Defending champ Gallagher claims first thundercar win; Rochelle takes Legends opener
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 3/14/09 - With new Musco lighting shining on the track surface and a talent-laden field of sprinters chasing him the whole way, Jeff Busby drove to his second career win in the 25-lap "410" sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
Busby beat polesitter Brent Marks to the first turn and led the whole way, but he didn’t claim the victory without challengers. Marks and Sean Michael chased Busby through two cautions flags in the early stages of the race. Alan Krimes suffered front-end damage on the initial start, bringing out the caution and forcing a complete restart. Jim Siegel spun in turn two and then Cris Eash stopped in turn four on the restart, bringing out successive cautions on lap five.
By the time the next yellow flag flew for a stopped Adam Lawrence on lap 14, eighth-starting Mark Smith and 11th-starting Daryn Pittman had advanced to second and third. Marks came to a stop on the front stretch during the caution after being scored second the lap before.
Pittman battled Smith for second on the restart and got the position, but allowed Busby to pull away to a 1.54-second lead with 10 laps to go.
Busby closed in on lapped traffic with five laps to go allowing Pittman to close in on his bumper. But Busby was not to be denied this night and ran flawlessly the rest of the way to pick up his second career checkers .97-seconds ahead of Pittman.
Smith settled for third, with 14th-starting Greg Hodnett crossing fourth and Sean Michael fifth. Completing the top ten were Brooke Tatnell, 13th-starting Niki Young, 19th-starting Doug Esh, Cody Darrah, and Brian Leppo.
"We put this car together last weekend and right out of the box it’s been really good," said Busby in victory lane, "Let’s hope it’s the car. The track was perfect tonight. It’s hard for me to pass cars, but I can go out front."
Some called it the strongest regular show field ever assembled in the Pigeon Hills. Among the drivers not making the show were Lance Dewease, Tim Shaffer, Johnny Mackison, Pat Cannon (third in Lincoln points heading into the night), and among others, 10-time track champ and all-time Lincoln winner Fred Rahmer, who finished eighth in the consolation event.
Heats for the 36 "410" sprinters were won by Busby, Justin Henderson, Lawrence, and Michael, with Chad Layton winning the consolation.
Defending track champ Sam Gallagher battled Danny Beard and Kyle Martin to win a thrilling 20-lap thundercar feature, his first win of 2009.
Beard led the first 12 laps before Gallagher finally edged ahead, and then held off Martin, Duane Watson, Gino Comi, and Brad Shank to the finish. Gallagher crossed .59-seconds ahead of Martin for his 10th career Lincoln win.
Sixth through tenth were Rick Weaver, Jimmy Combs, Mike Slaybaugh, Josh Ulrich, and Al Crammer.
Heats for the 25 Thundercars on hand were won by Danny Beard, Gallagher, and Martin.
Jason Rochelle squeaked out the win in the 2009 season opener for the Central PA Legends.
Rochelle made the winning pass of race-long leader Reed Solony on lap 12 and held off Solony and brother-in-law Tim Henry for his eighth career Lincoln win. Lucas Montgomery and Randy Kissinger completed the top five.
Heats for the 30 Legends were won by Robert Sobieski, Salony, and Henry, with Brian Weitzel winning the consolation.
Next Saturday, March 28th, at 6 PM, Lincoln Speedway will host all three point divisions, the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 Sprints, Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints and Thundercars. Racing action will get underway at 6 PM, with gates opening at 4 PM.
