Hammaker claims "358" sprint feature; Montgomery wins career first in Central PA Legends
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 5/30/09 - Cody Darrah’s star continued to rise Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway as he captured his second win in as many weeks in the 25-lap 410 sprint feature,
Darrah passed polesitter and race-long leader Bill Stine on the 12th lap and ran away from the field to pick up his second win of the year at the Pigeon Hill’s 3/8th-mile high-banked oval.
"This was an awesome night," said the happy 19-year old winner in victory lane. "What better place to win than Lincoln Speedway...with those fireworks earlier when they went off you could see all these fans in the stands. It’s just amazing to be here, let alone being alone out here on the front stretch."
"You know, when the old man leaves town for a night you have to take advantage of it," Darrah joked on the absence of 10-time track champ Fred Rahmer who was in Knoxville being inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, "And we did that tonight."
Stine drove into the lead at the drop of the green over outside frontrow starter Pat Cooper, with Danny Dietrich, Chris Knopp, and 10th-starting Darrah in tow by the end of the first lap.
"Paying attention to this track and what Fred Putney does to it pays off," said Darrah as he credited his quick move into the top five, "You know where to run and you get confidence...this car is just great. I’m just an engineer of this train on rails."
Darrah drove around Knopp to move into fourth by the end of the third lap, around Dietrich into third by the end of the fourth lap, and then motored around Cooper into second place on the seventh lap.
Stine held a 1.54-second advantage over Darrah as they approached lapped traffic as the non-stop action continued fast and furious.
Darrah quickly closed on the Mechanicsburg racer and drove around Stine for the lead exiting turn two on lap 12. The Red Lion speedster kicked it into another gear once into the lead , and made some daring moves around lapped traffic as the non-stop laps clicked off.
"You don’t have much time to think here," said Darrah on his daring moves in lapped traffic. "I don’t know if I even did think there...if I’d have to go back and do it again I don’t think I would have done it. We got in there and we were squeezing a little bit and got through there and got going. It worked out. But I’d have to say that it won’t always work."
Eighth-starting Brent Marks was marching his way through the field and was up to fourth when Darrah took the lead. Marks then passed Cooper for third on the 17th lap and got around Stine for second with five laps to go as Darrah enjoyed a 4.85-second lead.
Darrah appeared to be on his way to a non-stop win over Marks, but just as Darrah was coming off of turn four to take the checkered, defending track champion Brian Montieth spun in turn two to bring out the race’s only caution.
With several lapped cars between himself and second place Marks, Darrah drover away on the one-lap dash to the checkered by 2.68-seconds over his nearest competitor to register the popular win.
Aspers’ Danny Dietrich, who actually did a "360" on turn two early in the race, made a great move in lapped traffic on the final lap to pass Marks for second.
Marks settled for third, Stine was fourth, and 12th-starting Alan Krimes fifth.
Completing the top-10 were Cooper, 20th-starting Doug Esh, Cris Eash, Knopp, and Todd Rittenhouse Jr..
Heats for the 28 "410" sprints were won by Marks, Dietrich, and Cooper, with Doug Dodson winning the consolation.
Veteran racer Dale Hammaker came from his ninth-starting spot to pass fellow veteran driver Jason Clauss on the ninth lap for the lead and drove on to his first win of 2009 in the 20-lap 358 sprint feature.
Polesitter Nick Palmerino grabbed the lead at the outset and led the first five laps before Clauss, who started seventh, moved into the lead on the sixth lap.
Meanwhile Hammaker was methodically working his way through the field and moved into the runner-up spot on the eighth lap. The next lap the Grantville racer made his race-winning move and led the final 12 laps to take the checkered .81-seconds ahead of Clauss for his fifth-career win at Lincoln Speedway.
Defending track champion Jeff Rohrbaugh came from 11th to finish third, with Tim Wagaman fourth and Kyle Moody fifth.
Completing the top-10 were Eric Tomecek, 18th-starting Billy Dietrich, Austin Reed, Glenndon Forsythe, and Brad McClelland.
Heats for the 35 "358" sprints were won by Palmerino, Ricky Stonebraker, Moody, and Reed, with Scott Geesey winning the consolation.
York’s Lucas Montgomery came from the back after an early race spin to score his first career win in a thrilling 15-lap Central PA Legends feature. Montgomery started on the outside of the front row and actually led the first lap before spinning out in turn two of the second lap.
Polesitter Pat McDermott assumed the lead for the restart an led the next 11 laps before Montgomery raced back through the field and into the lead on lap 13. Harlon Leppo ran in the top three the entire way and crossed second at the finish, with McDermott third. Justin Grim and Scott Haudeshell completed the top five.
Heats for the 38 Central PA Legends were won by McDermott, Montgomery, Frank Polimeda, and Harlon Leppo, with Robert Sobieski and Jason Ewing winning twin consolations.
