Criswell claims first Lincoln Super Sportsman win; Knaub & Jones 358 late model winners

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 7/4/09 - "You never give up!"

That was what Aspers’ Glenndon Forsythe proclaimed in victory lane after picking up his first win of 2009 in the 25-lap "358" sprint feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

Forsythe, who led from the outset, lost the lead to a charging Jeff Rohrbaugh on lap 21. It looked like he would have to settle for second place. But Rohrbaugh began losing control in the turns over the final two laps, opening the door for Forsythe. Forsythe jumped to the inside, drove into the lead, and raced away to his third career Lincoln victory in the $1,200-to-win event.

With the win, Forsythe became the seventh different winner in seven 358 sprint events in 2009 at the Pigeon Hills oval.

Third-starting Forsythe grabbed the lead over polesitter Dale Hammaker and outside frontrow starter Billy Dietrich. Dietrich got by Hammaker on lap two to move into second. But a near spin on lap five allowed Hammaker to move back into the runner-up spot.

Meanwhile Rohrbaugh, who started sixth, was working his way to the front and drove past Dietrich on lap eight to move into third. As Forsythe entered lapped traffic on the 13th lap Rohrbaugh began to close the gap.

Then with five laps to go, Rohrbaugh dove low under Forsythe to take the lead in turns one and two.

With the two-laps to go flags in hand coming off the fourth turn Rohrbaugh’s sprinter began to come around on him exiting the turn. And Forsythe was there immediately diving under the flailing Rohrbaugh and drove by into the lead. Forsythe never looked back over the final two laps and took the checkered 1.26-seconds ahead of the Roy Vincent Racing #7v for the popular win.

Points leader Hammaker finished third, with fourth-starting Brad McClelland fourth and Dietrich settling for fifth. Completing the top-10 were Chad Criswell, Scott Geesey, Matt Boland, Jay Galloway, and Tim Berkheimer.

Heats for the 39 "358" sprinters were won by Forsythe, Criswell, Dale Hammaker, and Rohrbaugh, with Kevin Nagy and Adrian Shaffer winning twin consolation events.

After clawing his way to a hard-fought sixth place run in the 358 Sprint feature, Martinsburg West Virginia’s Chad Criswell jumped into his nonpower-steering No.55 Super Sportsman. And from his outside frontrow starting position, he grabbed the lead from polesitter Phil Griffith on the second lap and drove away from the field to a convincing win in the 25-lap super sportsman feature.

Griffith followed Criswell the entire distance and finished a distant 3.47-seconds behind when the checkered fell.

Fourth-starting Dylan Cisney finished third, 12th-starting Jason Fry was fourth, and seventh-starting Paul Miller was fifth. Completing the top-10 were Dave Berkheimer, Dave Socks, Rich Eichelberger, Carmen Perigo Jr., and Frankie Herr.

Heats for the 32 Super Sportsman were won by Herr, Miller, and Criswell, with Jay Fannasy winning the Consolation.

Shermansdale’s Shaun Jones held off big guns Gene Knaub and Bobby Beard over the final seven laps to score his first career Lincoln win in the regularly-scheduled 20-lap "358" late model feature.

Jones started third and wrestled the lead away from polesitter and race-long leader Travis Beavers on lap four. He led the rest of the way, but looked like a sitting duck when both 12th-starting Knaub and 7th-starting Beard pulled onto his back bumper for an 18th lap restart. But Jones held his line and held off two of the hottest drivers in 358 late model racing.

Knaub, who won the May 16th makeup feature earlier in the evening, settled for second with Beard third. Cory Houck and Mike Walls completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Scott Fisher (who started 17th), Bernie Beard, Beavers, John Baker, and Mike Spangler.

Heats for the 29 "358" Late Models were won by Jones, Derrike Zirkle, and Baker, with Roy Miller winning the consolation.

Knaub grabbed the lead from race-long leader Shaun Jones on the 10th lap and raced away to his second win of the year in the 20-lap make up feature from May 16th. Knaub started 12th and methodically worked his way to the front while outside frontrow starter Jones paced the field for the first nine laps. Once Knaub got the lead on lap 10, he pulled away to a convincing 3.81-second win over 13th-starting Mike Walls.

Jones hung on for third, with 19th-starting Craig Wagaman finishing fourth and Mike Spangler fifth. Completing the top-10 were Bobby Beard, Grant Adams, 17th-starting Cory Houck, polesitter Fred Harden, and John Moser Jr..

Next Saturday night, July 4th, at 7 PM it will be the Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints, Super Sportsman & 358 Late Models. Gates open at 5 PM, with warm-ups getting underway at 6:30 PM and the first heat taking the green flag at 7 PM.
