Trevor Lewis scores first Lincoln URC win
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 7/18/09 - After crashing early and finishing last the previous week, Jimmy Siegel simmered all week thinking about the lost chance in a really fast car. Saturday night, the third generation driver from New Oxford made up for it in grand fashion.
Siegel charged from his ninth starting spot to pass veteran racer Bobby Weaver on a fifth-lap restart for the lead and went unchallenged the rest of the way to earn his first win of the year in the 25 lap 410 sprint feature at Lincoln Speedway.
The third generation driver then held the potential fourth generation Siegel in victory lane - his son Jude.
"This is my son Jude," said Siegel as he introduced his baby son after exiting his N-Line/Orndorf Construction/CH Folf & Sons Feeds #59 in victory lane, "I’ve been wanting to get here to get photos of his first victory lane. He’s here every week, and I guess there’ll be another problem here in a few years!"
"I was bound and determined this week," added Siegel, "I had a really good car last week and I kinda’ put myself in a little bit of a predicament on the start and got banged up. I just had a lot of drive this week. I wanted to come back and win. We had a good chance last week and I let it slip through my fingers."
Polesitter Bobby Weaver held off outside front row starter Shawn "Big Block" Weaver at the drop of the green to hold the top spot until lap three, when Danny Dietrich and Fred Rahmer made contact in turns three and four, resulting in a Dietrich spin. During the caution, 10-time track champion Fred Rahmer’s sprinter was accidently struck by a push truck as Rahmer was entering the pits with a flat right front tire. Rahmer was given time to make repairs and rejoined the field.
Bobby Weaver then led laps three and four while a charging Siegel passed third-starting Ed Aikin for second just before Shawn Weaver got out of shape while fighting for the fourth position and flipped down the frontstretch. Big Block was not injured, but done for the night.
Siegel passed Bobby Weaver for the lead on the restart and quickly pulled out to 1.39 second advantage before the caution waved for a Jeff Busby spin on lap eight, and an ensuing red flag for a Doug Esh roll-over on the restart. Also collected in the crash were defending champ and points leader Brian Montieth, Cory Haas, Chad Trout, and Brian Leppo. Alan Krimes’ #87 was struck by Trout to start the melee, but Krimes was able to keep going and restarted fifth.
Siegel drove away on the restart, and raced away unchallenged over the final 18 laps to cross 1.14 seconds ahead of Aaron Ott, who got by Aiken for second on lap 11.
"We had a really good car this week, and on the red, my dad (Steve) and I talked about going down to the bottom. I tried it for a lap and I could just make more speed around the top. It worked out pretty good," said Siegel.
Third through fifth were Krimes, Aiken, and 18th-starting Niki Young. Completing the top ten were 24th-starting Adam Lawrence (who made the field as an alternate after Cris Eash failed to report to the starting grid in time), 19th-starting Brent Marks, Bobby Weaver, Rahmer, and Dietrich.
Heats for the 29 "410" Sprints were won by Bobby Weaver, Esh, and Shawn Weaver, with Marks winning the Consolation.
Trevor Lewis came from 15th starting spot to claim his first Lincoln win in the 25-lap URC "A" Main.
Lewis grabbed the lead from Nick Schlauch, Jr. as the leaders were coming off turn four with two laps to go and led to checkered, crossing 1.04 seconds ahead of Schlauch. Third through fifth were Randy West (who led the first eight laps before Schlauch led laps nine through 22), Justin Collett, and Danny Massey.
Sixth through tenth were Kramer Williamson, Josh Weller, Dave Gable, Davey Sammons, and Andy Best.
Heats for the 26 URC Sprints were won by Jonathan Swanson, Best, and West, with Curt Michael winning the B-Main.
Next Saturday night, July 25th, Lincoln Speedway will host a three-division show of Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints, 358 Late Models, and Thundercars.
Gates open at 5 PM, with warm-ups getting underway at 6:30 PM and the first heat taking the green flag at 7 PM.
