Lady driver Erin Statler wins PA Sprint Series 305's; Randy Kissinger takes Central PA Legends
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/1/09 - Just when it looked like Lincoln Speedway was going to get its 10th different winner in 10 "358" sprint events in 2009, the leaders collided coming off turn four to the checkered.
That opened the door for Lewisberry’s Kyle Moody to move from third to first for the one-lap dash to the checkered. And Moody didn’t pass the opportunity up as he held of John Barnett and Adrian Shaffer over the final lap to become the first repeat winner in 2009 in the 20-lap 358 sprint feature.
"I was running the car real hard and I felt like I was right there with them," said Moody in victory lane,"Those guys were getting real racey and I didn’t want to bust up the equipment again...we’ve been having bad luck the last two weeks...so I figured I’ll settle for third and be happy."
"Then on the last lap," continued Moody, "I thought, ‘They’re going to hit each other.’ They got into each other...and I’ll take ‘em any way I can have ‘em. Man, it was fun!"
Moody’s unexpected win came after race long leader Derek Sell was trying to hold off Nicole Bower for the win as they raced through the final turns to the checkered. Bower dove low under Sell entering the turns and slid up and crashed into the side of Sell, sending him tumbling as the checkered was quickly replaced by the red flag.
Sell raced into the lead from his outside front row starting spot at the drop of the green with fourth-starting Bower following. After a third lap red flag for a Mike Ressler roll-over in turn 3, sixth-starting Jason Clauss got around polesitter Brie Hershey to move into third place, with fifth-starting Moody following Clauss to move into fourth.
Following a Matt Boland spin on lap 10, Bower began to pressure Sell for the top spot as Moody went to work on Clauss for third. Moody finally worked his way past Class for third on the 14th lap.
As the leaders entered the final turns to the checkered, Bower drove hard into turn three and tried to pull a slider on Sell for the win. But Bower’s sprinter never cleared Sell and collided, sending them both up into the fourth turn wall with Sell rolling over.
Moody led the final lap, with Barnett and Shaffer second and third. Dale Hammaker padded his Lincoln points lead with a fourth-place finish, followed by 11th-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh. Sixth through tenth were Glenndon Forsythe, Clauss, 18th-starting Brad McClelland, 20th-starting Tim Berkheimer, and Hershey.
Heats for the 38 "358" Sprints were won by Moody, Hershey, Sell, and Bower, with Doug Hammaker and McClelland winning twin consolations.
Carlisle’s Erin Statler became the second woman to ever win a sprint car race at Lincoln Speedway (Becca Anderson was the first in a 358 sprinter) after leading every lap of the 20-lap PA Sprint Series 305 feature. Though she’s won in the Virginia 305 Sprint Series, the win from the front row was her first in Pennsylvania.
Though Statler led every lap, she received nearly race-long pressure from eighth starting Mark Watkins, who moved into the runner-up on the second lap and dogged Statler the rest of the way. Though he closed on the leader every lap in the second turn, he could never make the pass, and cross a quarter-second behind Statler.
Third through fifth were Randy Kaylor, Todd Spangler, and George Riden.
Heats for the 24 PA Sprint Series 305 Sprints were won by Brett Hockenberry, Mark Watkins, and Jason Brandt.
He’s won two national championships, but Saturday night’s win was the first at Lincoln Speedway for Randy Kissinger, who took the lead from Harlon Leppo on the fifth lap and led the rest of the 15-lap feature event for Central PA Legends.
Kissinger crossed .31-seconds in front of former PA champ Steve Nederostek, with Lucas Montgomery, Pat McDermott, and Jason Rochelle finishing third through fifth.
Heats for the 33 Central PA Legends were won by Reed Solony, Greg Burd, Kissinger, and Nederostek, with Frank Polimeda winning the consolation.
Next Saturday night, August 8th, it will be ARCH Night at Lincoln Speedway with all three regular point divisions in action - the Miller Brothers Chevrolet 410 Sprints, Keizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints, and the ever-popular Thundercars. In addition, the 358 Sprinters will be running their leg of the special Trail-Way/Lincoln Speedway Shootout Series.
Gates open at 5 PM, with warm-ups getting underway at 6:30 PM and the first heat taking the green flag at 7 PM.
