ECKERT DOMINATES 2ND ANNUAL CHARGIN’ CHARLIE GRINESTAFF MEMORIAL

Korey Sites claims street stock feature

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/12/09 - Lincoln Speedway is Rick Eckert’s house. And he proved it again Wednesday night, even with throttle problems.

Hometown hero Rick Eckert of York helped the Grinestaff family celebrate the race’s namesake by leading all 40-laps of the $7,000-to-win Second Annual Chargin’ Charlie Grinestaff Memorial at Lincoln Speedway Wednesday night.

"I love coming here and watching my nephew (Cody Darrah) run sprint cars," said Eckert after pulling the Raye Vest Racing #24 into victory lane, "I don’t know what happened, but during that first caution, I don’t know if something broke in the throttle linkage in the secondary got stickin’. They were wanting me to slow down during those caution flags, but I was burning the brakes out trying to slow down!"

The Grinestaff Memorial was originally scheduled as race five of seven of the Inaugural Appalachian Mountain Dirt Late Model Speedweek series back on June the 10th, but was postponed due to rain after all the heats and one consolation were in the book.

And with only three cars on hand for the continuation of the second consolation, the consolation was not needed and all that remained was the big 40-lap feature.

Eckert drove from his outside front row starting position into the lead over polesitter Jeff Rine at the drop of the green. Fourth-starting Jason Covert got around Rine for second before the first lap was complete, with third-starting DJ Myers and sixth-starting Booper Bare running fourth and fifth respectively by the end of the opening lap.

Eckert opened up a slim .72-second lead as he was about to enter lapped traffic on the seventh lap when the caution waved for Steve Francis who stopped on the frontstretch.

Eckert continued to lead Covert and Rine through a series of cautions on lap nine for a slowing Scotty Haus and on lap 15 for a stopped DJ Myers, who was running fourth at the time.

Eckert entered lapped traffic on lap 23 as he continued to lead Covert by 1.79-seconds, with Rine still in third. Seventh-starting Josh Richards began pressuring Rine for third on the 20th-lap and on the 23rd lap "Kid Rocket" made the pass to enter the top-three.

The race’s final caution with 15 laps to go for a stopped Jason Miller allowed Covert and Richards one last chance to catch Eckert.

But Eckert got a good restart and gradually began to pull away as the laps wound down. He took the checkered 1.32-seconds ahead of Covert for the $7,000 win, $2,000 of which was added by the Grinestaff family.

Though the World of Outlaw start has spent most of his life on the road, the win was Eckert’s 23rd career win in the Pigeon Hills, moving him into a tie for seventh on the all-time Lincoln late model win list with Bobby Goodling.

Richards settled for third, with Rine fourth and Bare fifth. Completing the top ten were fast timer Jeremy Miller, Alan Sagi, Gary Stuhler, Nick Dickson, and the race’s Hard Charger Devin Friese who came from 20th to 10th to take home an added $500 from the Grinestaffs.

Jeremy Miller picked up an extra $300 for coming from fourth starting spot to win the Grinestaff six-lap dash. As the fast timer, he was actually added to the field when Myers was unable to report. Eckert crossed second and picked up an additional $200.

Heats for the Late Models back in June were won by Rine, Eckert, Myers, and Richards, with Scotty Haus winning the B-Main.

Setting a new one-lap track record in time trials over the 47-car field in June was Jeremy Miller, with a one-lap time of 15.540-seconds (86.874 MPH), breaking the old record of 16.274 seconds set by Rick Eckert on August 13, 2005.

In fact, the top 20 qualifiers all broke the old record when time trials were complete.

Korey Sites barely missed a multi-car crash from his ninth starting spot on the opening lap and drove through the field to win the 20-lap street stock feature. Sites restarted fifth when the entire second row and inside third-row starter Brian Racine all got together on turn two. Several other cars were involved, and Sites’ car actually shut off during the melee, but he was able to re-fire and keep moving.

Sites chased down polesitter and race long leader Dan Zechman after taking second from Paul Morgan on lap six. His race-winning move came on lap nine.

Crossing second .41-seconds behind Sites was Jerry Fifield, who promptly disqualified when he refused to have the motor pumped. Second was awarded to sixth-starting Randy Zechman, with Paul Morgan, Joey Hoffer, and Craig Morgan third through fifth. Completing the top ten were 17th-starting David Walsh, 23rd-starting Walt Lemmon, 22nd-starting Jeff Haig, Kevin Wirt, and 24th-starting Jim Gross.

Heats for the Street stocks were won by Dan Zechman, Paul Morgan, and Steve Dove, with Pat McNeal winning the consolation.

This Saturday night, August 15th, the Miller Brothers Chevrolet 410 Sprints will be back in action in a 100 appearance points show along with the United Racing Company (URC) Sprints for there second appearance of 2009 at the Pigeon Hills oval. Kids Big Wheels will round out the evening’s racing action with gates opening at 5 PM, and racing action getting underway at 7 PM.
