Curt Michael scores third career Lincoln URC victory
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/15/09 - He might have not know where he was, but the fans did.
And Danny Dietrich took advantage of a late caution to win a three-car battle for the lead and claim his second win of the year in the 25-lap "410" sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
" I don’t even know where I came from," said Dietrich jokingly in victory lane. "At the beginning I thought we were going to be in trouble. We went back and Cory (Haas) and Cris (Eash) passed up like we were sitting still and the next thing you know here comes Alan (Krimes) and the caution comes out. I’m sitting in 10th and thinking we’ll just salvage something out of this. I didn’t feel good at all."
"We went back green and it seems like I was racing with Cris and Alan the whole time and the next thing you know the caution comes out and I’m sitting in third," said Dietrich, "I couldn’t believe it! I didn’t realize where I was."
Actually, Dietrich was in third by the time the final caution of the race came out for a stopped Doug Esh on the backstretch of lap 20. The caution was a bad break for tenth-starting Cory Haas, who had chased down Big Block Weaver and took the lead exiting turn two as the caution flag waved, forcing Haas back to second for the restart.
One lap later, Weaver, Haas, and Dietrich raced three-wide into turn one, with Haas doing a ‘360' and continuing but losing several spots. At the same time, Dietrich took to the cushion to drive around Weaver for the race lead. From there, he drove away to a 2.58-second win over Cris Eash, who passed Weaver for the runner-up spot on the last lap.
Weaver settled for third, with 12th-starting Alan Krimes fourth and 14th-starting Jim Siegel fifth. Completing the top ten were 22nd-starting Brian Montieth, polesitter Ed Aiken (who led the first 10 laps before yielding to Weaver), Haas, Brian Leppo, and Brent Marks.
Heats for the 26 "410" Sprints were won by Todd Rittenhouse Jr., Aikin, and Big Block Weaver, with Esh winning the Consolation.
Curt Michael scored his second win of the season in the 25-lap United Racing Company feature, catching race-long leader Justin Collett for the lead as the two entered heavy lapped traffic on lap 18.
Michael claimed his 41st career URC victory by 2.27 seconds over Collett, with point leader JJ Grasso (who started tenth) crossing third, Brent Schoenly fourth, and Davey Sammons fifth. Sixth through tenth were Art Leidl, Nick Schlauch, Jr., Becca Anderson, Chris Coyle, and Josh Weller.
Jimmy Stitzel picked up a $300 hard charger bonus from the family and friends of 1978 URC Lincoln winner John Drauker for coming from 23rd-starting spot to finish 15th.
Heats for the 23 URC Sprints were won by Ed Wagner, Tim Hogue, and Collett. Hogue was uninjured in a turn three flip on lap two that was the only caution of the feature.
Next Saturday night, August 22nd, it will be KIDS NIGHT and York County Racing Club Night, with hundreds of prizes given away to children in attendance and $2 off admission for all card-carrying members of the club.
