McINTYRE CLAIMS FIRST CAREER 410 SPRINT CAR WIN;
MONTIETH TAKES SECOND OF TWIN 20'S TO HOLD ONTO POINTS LEAD;
Zentmyer holds off Watson to claim first career Lincoln thundercar win
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/29/09 - It was a tale of two races at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. And the more things changed, the more they stayed the same.
Defending track champ Brian Montieth didn’t take kindly to being edged by 23rd-starting Fred Rahmer for sixth at the line of the first of Twin 20's for the 410 sprint cars and losing the points lead to second-place finisher Alan Krimes. So he went out and won the second feature.
The irony was that Montieth’s seventh-place finish (eight-thousandths of-a-second behind Rahmer) put Montieth up one row to sixth starting spot for the second feature event.
Montieth passed polesitter Bobby Weaver for third by the end of the fourth lap, then caught Cory Haas for second on a 10th-lap restart. He pulled onto the back bumper of race-long leader Johnny Mackison, Jr. during a 13th-lap caution for a spinning Brian Leppo in turn four, and chased the B&B Metal Refinishing #65 for the next two lap before making the race-winning pass under Mackison coming off turn four of lap 14.
Montieth pulled away to a two and-a-half second lead on lap 17 before entering lapped traffic on the final lap and crossing .81 seconds ahead of Rahmer, who caught Mackison for second on lap 17.
Ninth-starting Cody Darrah got by Mackison for third at the finish line, with Krimes coming from 11th to finish fifth.
The win put Montieth and Krimes back where they started in points at the beginning of the night, with Montieth holding a narrow 10-point lead heading into the final points race of the season next Saturday night.
18-year-old Gerard McIntyre, Jr. scored his first career win in the crash-marred opener.
The crashes started early, with Jim Siegel flipping in turns three and four of the first lap. Siegel collected Rahmer, who tipped onto his side. The crash also took out the Racers Used Part Warehouse #88 of Danny Dietrich, who needed brief medical attention before walking to the pits.
Rahmer was able to return to the starting grid, and came through the field to edge Montieth for sixth at the line. That gave Krimes a brief 15-point lead entering the second feature of the night.
McIntyre, who started sixth, grabbed the lead from polesitter and race-long leader Todd Rittenhouse, Jr. coming off turn two of an 11th-lap restart.
That pass came just before a spectacular crash which saw third-place Doug Esh vault higher than the catch fence in turn two, bringing out the red. Though he was conscious and talking to emergency crews, Esh was taken to York Hospital with an unspecified back injury.
Ott assumed third after the crash. But on the restart, second-place Rittenhouse did a wheelie coming off turn four and came down on Ott, sending the Miller Automotive/Don Ott Racing Engines #25 into a series of flips on the frontstretch, bringing out the red again. Ott was uninjured in the crash.
That put 11th-starting Krimes in the runner-up spot for the restart, but McIntyre was up to the challenge, driving flawlessly over the remaining eight non-stop laps to cross .63 seconds ahead Krimes. Mark Smith, Darrah, and 18th-starting Daryn Pittman completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Rahmer, Montieth; Rittenhouse , Brent Marks and Haas.
Heats for the 28 "410" Sprints were won by Esh, McIntyre Jr., and Pat Cooper, with Cris Eash winning the consolation.
Waynesboro’s Jamie Zentmyer started on the pole and led all 20-laps en route to his first career Lincoln Speedway thundercar win. Although points leader Duane Watson closed on the leader during a pair of restarts late in the event, Zentmyer was able to pull away each time to cross .38 seconds in front of the 2007 point champ.
Defending track champ came from his distant 21st starting spot to finish third and stay within striking distance of Watson in the battle for the ‘09 Lincoln point title.
Larry Neiderer and Al Crammer completed the top five.
Mikey Guise was unable to start after a spectacular barrel roll along the front stretch catch fence in his heat. Though the crash knocked the roof off the car and the Ministry Motorsports #93 caught fire, Guise was uninjured.
Heats for the 21 Thundercars were won by Zentmyer, Kyle Martin, and Jeff Wilson.
Next Saturday night, September 5th, it will be Fisher Auto Parts Night at Lincoln Speedway featuring the 410 Sprints, Super Sportsman and 358 Late Models.
