Slaybaugh claims third win of the year in thundercar feature
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 7/1/2010 - Former track champ Lance Dewease relied on years of experience, took what the track gave him, and drove to the $5,000 win on night number five of Pennsylvania Speedweek for 410 sprint cars at Lincoln Speedway Thursday night.
Although he started on the front row, Dewease watched two other drivers lead the first 14 laps.
First it was polesitter Greg Hodnett, who led the first eight laps. As Dewease was setting up for a low-side pass entering turn one of lap nine, third-starting Brian Montieth took to the top side to pass both Dewease and Hodnett in a thrilling three-wide battle through turns one and two.
"Greg and I got to racing each other so hard that we left the top wide open," said Dewease in victory lane, "Everyone knows where Montieth runs...it’s one place, and that’s the wall."
"I thought we could maybe get back at him if we were patient enough, continued Dewease, "I just made up my mind that I was going to slide him, and if I could keep in front of him, I wasn’t coming off the wall. He was going to have to pass me on the bottom or do a flyer or something on me."
As Montieth led the next six laps, Dewease continued to work on Hodnett for the runner-up spot, making the pass on lap 12. Three laps later, Dewease slid under the two-time defending Lincoln champ for the front spot in turns three and four of lap 15, just before the lone caution of the event came out for debris in turn one.
"We thought that if they water it (the track), we might have a shot with (the number) we drew," said Dewease after his 33rd career Lincoln win, "Those two guys that got back by me (Montieth and Hodnett) are pretty darn good racers. I kinda knew where I had to be, and I wasn’t going to move off the top until I knew I could go by the (lapped) car in front of me."
Though he led the rest of the way, Dewease could never shake Montieth, who crossed a slim 28-hundredths of-a-second behind the Advance Development Services/Hank’s Performance Products Don and Lisa Owens-owned #30c. Hodnett was actually closing on the leaders over the final laps, and finished a close third, with Daryn Pittman fourth and Alan Krimes fifth.
Completing the top ten were Brent Marks, Gerard McIntyre, Jr., Fred Rahmer, Johnny Mackison, Jr., and Chad Layton completed the top ten.
Steve Buckwalter actually finished seventh, but was credited with a 24th-place finish after it was discovered that he changed a rear tire without notifying officials and going to the back of the field for the start.
Sprint heats were won by Pittman, Marks, Hodnett, and Montieth, with Brad McClelland winning the B-Main.
Fast time in time trials over the 31-car field was set by Chad Layton with a one-lap time of 14.058 seconds (96.031 MPH).
New Oxford’s Mike Slaybaugh became the first three-time winner in Thundercar action by picking up an exciting win in there 20-lap feature.
Slaybaugh, who started fifth, chased down polesitter and race-long leader Jamie Zentmyer on the 18th lap and make an inside pass for the lead. The second generation driver then held off two-time winner Sam Gallagher in an exciting one-lap dash to the checkered for his sixth career win at the Pigeon Hills oval.
Gallagher settled for second, with Zentmyer hanging on for third, hard-charger Brian Walls fourth and Jimmy Combs fifth.
Heats for the 11 Thundercars were won by Combs and Gallagher.
