HODNETT PICKS UP FIRST LINCOLN WIN OF THE YEAR IN 410 SPRINTS

Cannon becomes 15th winner in 17 races in 358 sprints; Martin closes season with Thundercar win;

Gallagher claims 2011 Lincoln Thundercar track title

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 10/15/2011 – Greg Hodnett was the class of the field in Saturday’s 25-lap 410 sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

Hodnett took the lead from polesitter and race-long leader Logan Schuchart on lap ten and held off Danny Dietrich and Chad Layton to claim his 24th career Lincoln win.

“We’re always trying different things,” said Hodnett upon exiting the Eagle Steel/Trone Outdoor Advertising/Macri Concrete #39 in victory lane, “Lee (Stauffer) and the guys did a great job getting the car set up. I felt really good in the heat and I could run wherever…it just worked out for us to get to the front first.”

Hodnett started seventh and advanced the fourth by the end of the second lap. He drove under Danny Dietrich for third on lap three, and both he and Dietrich caught front-row starter Brian Leppo (who was piloting the Heffner Racing #27) for second and third on lap four.

Hodnett closed on Schuchart and made the race-winning pass on lap ten. Dietrich caught Schuchart for the runner-up spot one lap later, and Layton moved into third on lap 14 and was closing on the leaders when the first caution of the race came out for a spinning Cory Haas in turn four of lap 17.

Brad McClelland, taking his first ride in the C.C. Dietz #14, brought out a caution in turn four on the restart, and Austin Reed spun on turn two of lap 18. But neither Dietrich nor Layton had anything for Hodnett on either of the restarts or the remainder of the race.

“I saw Danny try to shove it underneath us there a couple of times, and I figured I’d better move down there and see what was around,” said Hodnett, “Sure enough, there was rubber starting to take, and the longer you run, it gets faster and faster. At the end, I just kinda’ slowed down to make sure I didn’t get into traffic, and I figured if they were good enough to go around on the top, so be it. But the bottom was definitely the place to be at the end.”

Schuchart settled for fourth, with Mark Smith rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth were Brent Marks (back in the family #19M), Alan Krimes, Doug Esh, Brian Montieth, and Leppo.

Heats for the 25 “410” Sprint were won by Hodnett, Randy Baughman, and Dietrich.

Pat Cannon started on the pole and dominated the 20-lap “358” sprint car feature, becoming the 15th different driver to win in 17 races this season. Cannon’s fourth career Lincoln win came by 3..41 seconds over Todd Rittenhouse, Jr., with 2011 Central PA rookie of-the-year Niki Young, Jacob Allen, and Kevin Nouse (in the Dan Mansberger #21T) completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Mark Smith, Austin Hogue, Billy Dietrich, Glenndon Forsythe, and Scott Geesey.

Heats for the 41 “358" sprinters were won by Cannon, Dietrich, Kyle Purks, and Aaron Spahr. Twin consolations were won by Ted Thomas, Jr. and Chad Trout.

Kyle Martin caught polesitter and race-long leader Brian Diehl on lap 13 and drove to his second career Lincoln win in the season finale for Thundercars.

Diehl crossed .88-seconds behind Martin to finish second, with Sam Gallagher wrapping up his championship season with a third-place finish. Roy Warehime and Mike Slaybaugh completed the top five.

Gallagher received a glass cup from pathundercars.com for being the 2011 “Driver of the Year” in victory lane, and promptly announced that he will move up to the 358 late models in 2012.

Heats for the 20 Thundercars were won by Mikey Guise and Martin.

Lincoln Speedway will be back in action next Friday night, Oct. 21st for final race of the 2011 racing season with the 59th Anniversary/John Gleim, Jr. Excavating Night featuring Twin 20’s for the 410 Sprints and the Central PA Legends.
