Duaine Smith leads ‘em all in super sportsman feature; Levan takes INEX Legends main

Pat Cannon Sunday Night 358 Sprint Winner
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 5/28/06 - Mechanicsburg’s Pat Cannon picked up his first career Lincoln Speedway win Saturday night in the 20-lap 358 sprint feature.

Cannon, who started along polesitter and defending track champion Billy Dietrich, slipped around the Aspers driver exiting the fourth turn of the opening lap for the lead, and then held off a determined Dale Hammaker over the final 18 laps to register the win.

The action came to a quick stop on the second lap for a seven car crash in the first and second turns which saw third-starting Todd Rittenhouse lose control and flip, collecting Cory Haas, Adam Wilt, Mike Duncan, Bob Anderson and Jimmy Layton.

Fourth-starting Dale Hammaker drove around Dietrich on the restart to move into second, just before the first of four cautions waved for the stopped Steve Owings sprinter in the fourth turn.

Cannon continued to hold off Hammaker through cautions on the sixth-, 10th- and 15th-laps.

The sixth lap caution was for the stopped Mike Duncan sprinter. The 10th lap caution ended a very dramatic run by former champion Chad Trout who had roared up through the field from his 18th starting spot and had worked his way up to sixth at one point. But a flat right rear tire brought out the caution and ended his hopes of a win. The final caution on the 15th lap was for fifth-running Danny Dietrich who spun in the first and second turns.

Meanwhile, former two-time track champ Haas, who was involved in the second lap crash, was charging through the field and running sixth as the field took the green with six laps to go.

Cannon drove the final laps flawlessly and took the checkered 1.20-seconds ahead of points leader Hammaker for the win.

After getting passed for second place on the third lap, Billy Dietrich ran tough the rest of the way to finish third, with Jeff Rohrbaugh (who started sixth) finishing fourth and Haas fifth. Completing the top ten 10 were Joe Ilg, Bobby Howard, Davie Franek, Nate Hammaker and Rory Janney.

Heats for the 39 "358" sprinters were won by Haas, Rittenhouse, Rohrbaugh and Dale Hammaker. Twin consolations were won by Randy Rhoads and Trout.

Duaine Smith Super Sportsman Winner
Polesitter Duaine Smith grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and held off veteran driver Smokey Snellbaker over the final 16 laps of the race to pick up the win in the 20 lap super sportsman feature.

Smith, from Linglestown, outraced fellow frontrow starter Snellbaker over the opening lap to take the lead with fifth-starting John Stehman sneaking by into second by the end of the opening lap.

The "Silver Fox", Snellbaker, regrouped and fought back to take back the runner-up spot on the fourth lap and chased Smith the rest of the way.

Frankie Herr came through the field from his ninth starting spot to grab third on lap 10 and ran there the rest of the race, with 18th-starting Jim Shuttlesworth crossing fourth and Stehman settling for fifth. Completing the top ten were 17th-starting Rich Eichelberger, Craig Morrow, Steve Cannon, Carmen Perigo, Jr., and Steve Wilbur.

Heats for the 35 Super Sportsman were won by Snellbaker, Bobby Weaver, Perigo, and Cannon. Twin consolations were won by Rich Eichelberger and Shuttlesworth.

Brian Levan INEX Legends Winner
Kutztown’s Brian Levan has done everything but win at Lincoln Speedway throughout his career. He finally reached his goal by claiming the 15-lap INEX Legends feature over the team cars of Ronnie Dunstan and Jason Rochelle, who crossed second and third, respectively. Josh Morrow came from 20th-starting spot to finish fourth, with Rodney Adams coming home fifth.

Heats for the 40 INEX Legends were won by Dunstan, Rochelle, Steve Nederostek and Tim Tomson. Twin consolations were won by Jason Ewing and Bill Harris.

Next Saturday night, June 3rd, the All Star Circuit of Champions invade the Pigeon Hills oval to take on the Pennsylvania Posse. Time trials get underway at 7:30 PM. The 358 sprinters will round-out the special two-division show. Gates will open at 5:30 PM.
