| Eichelberger becomes 2-time Sportsman 100 winner |
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 9/16/06 - It was all Rich Eichelberger in the 32nd Annual "Sportsman 100" at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
Eichelberger, who ran second to Fred Putney in the first "Sportsman 100" 32 years ago and won his only other "100" in 1979, set fast time and led the last 57 laps to claim the $4,000 top prize over the 40-car field.
Eichelberger started fourth after picking the inversion pill after time trials, and ran fourth behind outside front row starter Dave Calaman, third-starting Paul Miller, and polesitter Frankie Herr for the first 26 laps before getting by Herr for third place. He then ran down Paul Miller to grab the runner-up spot on the backstretch of lap 35. At the time, last year’s winner Calaman enjoyed a 2.49-second lead as the front runners raced through lapped traffic.
Eichelberger began to close the gap and made his race-winning pass on lap 44. Seven laps later, Calaman lost second to Miller, just before a caution came out for Geremy Strausser on turn four. During the caution, Calaman dropped out of the race with no brakes.
After that, Eichelberger opened up a 4.32-second lead over Miller and Herr by the time the mandatory red was thrown at the completion of the 65th lap. At the break, Gregg Foster and Carmen Perigo, Jr. were running fourth and fifth.
When the race was restarted, Eichelberger picked up where he left off. On lap 72, Herr got by Miller for second, and Foster closed on Miller to start a 25-lap wheel-to-wheel battle for third. Herr closed on Eichelberger in lapped traffic over the final laps, but crossed 1.5-seconds behind the winner. Foster edged Miller for third, with 22nd-starting and hard charger award winner Bobby Weaver crossing fifth. Completing the top ten were Jason Fry, Perigo, Bobby Hockenberry, John Stehman, and Steve Fannasy.
"It was a great night," said Eichelberger in victory lane, "I want to thank the Leibys and Alan Kreitzer for making this the new home for the ‘100'. The track was in great shape, and we had a lot of fun."
In addition to the winner’s share, Eichelberger won $570 in lap money provided by lap sponsors.
C-Mains were won by Weaver and Smokey Snellbaker, while Scott Dellinger won the B-Main. Dellinger advanced from 15th starting spot to fifth before hitting the outside guardrail exiting turn two of lap 80, ending his night.
Fast time in time trials was set by Eichelberger with a one-lap time of 15.838-seconds (85.238 MPH).
Sykesville, MD’s David Prunkl scored his second win of the year in the 20-lap thundercar feature. Prunkl started fourth, followed outside front row starter and race long leader Al Cramer for the first four laps before grabbing the point on lap five. He led the rest of the way, holding off Cramer by .82-seconds for his 12th career win in the Pigeon Hills. Craig Wagaman started sixth and finished third, with Mike Walls and Duane Watson completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Nat Tuckey, Bob Bare, point leader Neil Smith, Danny Beard, and Sam Gallagher.
Watson’s fifth-place finish combined with Smith’s eighth-place finished closed Watson to within 55 points of Smith with three points races to go.
Heats for the 25 thundercars were won by Mike Walls, Tuckey and Gallagher.
Shippensburg’s Randy Patterson led every lap to claim the 20-lap street stock feature. Running second through fifth from the second lap to the end were Chad Smith, George Eash, Kory Sites, and Sam Leonard.
Heats for the 25 Street Stocks were won by Leonard, Kory Sites and Smith.
