SOCKS’ THIRD “FIRST-EVER WIN” OF ‘06 COMES AT LINCOLN

EICHELBERGER SUPER SPORTSMAN TOUR CHAMP;
Carl Billet class of limited late model field; Zeigler Jr. Wins first of year in Thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 10/14/06 - It’s been quite a year for Hagerstown’s Dave Socks. After entering 2006 without a career feature victory, Socks followed first-ever wins at Williams Grove and Susquehanna Speedway Park with a win in the 20-lap super sportsman season finale at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

Tour points handicapping placed Socks sixth for the start. After a three-car tangle in turns one and two of the original start and a three-car crash which took out tour points leader Craig Morrow on lap two, Socks advanced to third behind front-row starter Danny Hager and polesitter Brian Boughter. The next 16 laps went non-stop, with Socks getting around Boughter for second on lap six and grabbing the race lead from Hager in turns three and four of lap 12.

Socks’ lead was two and-a-half seconds when the red came out for a flipping Jim Shuttlesworth on turn four of the 18th lap. Before the cars could come to a stop, fifth-place Frankie Herr rolled his sportsman on the backstretch, ending his bid for the season-long super sportsman tour series championship. Neither driver was injured, but both drivers were done for the night.

Socks paced the field through one more caution flag on lap 19, and pulled away to a .78-second win over a charging Rich Eichelberger, who came from 11th starting spot.

Eichelberger’s second-place run, combined with crashes involving Morrow, Herr, and John Stehman and Paul Miller’s fourth-place finish, was just enough to vault Eichelberger from fifth to the top in season points.

Eichelberger’s second career super sportsman tour championship came by five points over Miller (1055 to 1050), with Morrow third (970), Herr fourth (960), and Stehman fifth (935). It was Eichelberger’s first tour championship since the first-ever tour in 1989.

Third through fifth in the feature were Hager, Miller, and Boughter, with Russ Mitten, Ryan Rupp (who started 24th), Carmen Perigo, Jr., Glenn Keller, and Kevin Yingst completing the top ten.

Heats for the 35 Super Sportsman were won by Boughter, Steve Wilbur, Herr, and Eichelberger, with Gregg Foster and Duaine Smith winning twin consolations.

After drawing pill #0 for the invert, York Haven’s Carl Billet took advantage of a heads-up start to lead every lap of the limited late model feature.

Billet was lucky in more ways than one. A first-lap crash exiting turn four of the first lap led to a Les Hare flip and stacked up a total of 17 cars. Three of the cars at the back stopped because the track was completely blocked and were permitted to restart behind the cars who were not involved. One of them was Colby Frye, was started 18th and finished sixth.

Despite leading every lap, Billet could not shake the #8 of Mike Shoemaker of Heston, who ran second most of the way. Shoemaker did yield to Scott Richwine on lap 11, but Richwine pulled up lame with a flat tire three laps later.

Billet’s final race with the #2M team ended in a .88-second win over Shoemaker, with Darryl Burkholder third, Carl Graves fourth, and Arlin Brougher fifth. Sixth through tenth were Frye, Fred Harden, Pat Beard, Chuck Yingling, and 24th-starting Kyle Saylor.

Heats for the 37 Limited late models were won by Billet, Shoemaker, Richwine, and Cory Hauck, with Pat Beard and Frye winning twin consolations.

Mike Zeigler Jr. shot from his sixth starting spot into the lead on the opening lap of the 20-lap thundercar feature and held off all challengers to pick up his first win of 2006. The win was the 14th of his career, moving him into a 10th-place tie with Nat Tuckey on the all time win list. He also became the 11th different winner in thundercar action in 2006.

Eighth-starting Bob Stough raced Zeigler hard the entire way, but had to settle for second by .47-seconds and held off a hard-charging Nat Tuckey who settled for third.

10th-starting Sam Gallagher finished fourth and David Prunkl finished fifth.

Completing the top-10 were Duane Watson, Al Crammer, Smoke Christine, Gino Comi and Bob Allen.

Watson’s sixth place finished, coupled with point leader Neil Smith’s 14th place finish allowed Watson to close with 105 points with only one race remaining.

Heats for the 29 thundercars were won by Comi, Watson and Tuckey, with Beard winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, October 21st Lincoln Speedway will close-out the 2006 racing season with the rescheduled 10th Annual Kenny Weld Memorial for the 410 Sprints. The 2006 Season Finale will also include the thundercars who will be finishing out there season-long battle for the thundercar championship.
