Watson opens defense of ‘07 title with "Lawrence Chevrolet Spring Thaw 20" win in thundercars;
Geremy Sheaffer claims season opener for Central PA INEX Legends

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 3/21/08 - It was Lincoln career win number 22 for #22 on 3/22.

Former World of Outlaw driver Greg Hodnett, who now calls Thomasville home, came from sixth starting spot to win his first feature event of the year over a field that included several World of Outlaw invaders that he used to race with every night.

Among those who qualified for the feature were Outlaws point leader Craig Dollansky, Joey Saldana, Chad Kemenah, and Lucas Wolfe. Among those who didn’t was NASCAR Sprint Cup star Kasey Kahne, who fought his ill-handling sprinter in both his qualifier and the consolation event and declined an offer to enter the feature as a provisional starter.

Hodnett advanced from his outside third row starting spot to move around Ryan Taylor for the runner-up spot from Ryan Taylor on the third lap, then drove around race-long leader Pat Cooper for the lead in the first and second turns of a lap seven restart. From there, Hodnett drove away to a 2.58-second victory over Mark Smith, with Taylor holding on for third. Dollansky came from 12th-starting spot to cross fourth at the finish, with defending Lincoln champ Fred Rahmer coming from 18th-starting spot to finish fifth.

"We’ve had a few problems the past few weeks, but we capitalized on a decent starting position tonight, made it through a heat...all of the heats here are really, really tough...and that put us into position for the feature," said Hodnett upon exiting the Jim and Sandy Kline J&S Fabrication #22, "I was pretty good in the open when I didn’t have to slow down. But when I started slowing down for lapped cars, I got a little fouled up. I didn’t want to crash and everyone was going pretty hard, so I just tried to stay out of trouble and stay out front."

Sixth through tenth were Cris Eash, Chad Layton, 23rd-starting Brian Montieth (who got into the race as the first alternate when Brian Paulus and Stevie Smith both scratched from the field), Cooper, and Lucas Wolfe.

Rick Lafferty was uninjured when he lost the handle and smacked into the front stretch guardrail and flipped while running second on lap three. John Westbrook was also uninjured when he rolled onto his side in turn four of lap 21, bringing out the event’s only other red flag.

Despite the cold temperatures, a huge crowed was on hand to see NASCAR star Kasey Kahne compete. After declining a provisional, Kahne came to victory lane at intermission to talk with track announcer Wayne Harper and thank the fans.

Heats for the 34 "410" sprints were won by Jeff Busby, Cooper, Doug Esh and Lafferty, with TJ Stutts taking the consolation event.

Abbottstown’s Duane Watson started off the defense of his 2007 Thundercar track title in grand style by winning the 20-lap $500-to-win Lawrence Chevrolet Spring Thaw 20. Along the way, he also set a new 8-lap track record in winning his heat by nearly seven seconds.

Pole sitter Danny Beard grabbed the lead at the drop of the green with third-starting Mike Slaybaugh and outside frontrow starter Gino Comi following. It became obvious quickly that seventh-starting Watson had found the fast way around using the new racing tires mandated in 2008 for the thundercars as he charged into second place by the third lap behind Beard.

Finding the middle groove to his liking, Watson drove around Beard into the lead on the sixth lap and then held off all challenges the rest of the way to take the checkered 2.46 seconds ahead of Beard to record his 18th career Lincoln win.

22nd-starting Larry Niederer drove a great race to come through the field to finish third, 16th-starting Sam Gallagher fourth and Slaybaugh fifth. Completing the top-10 were Mike Walls, Justin Mong, Neil Smith, Kyle Martin and Mike Reese.

Heats for the 28 thundercars were won by Brad Shank, Smith and Watson, with Mike Walls winning the consolation.

Elliottsburg’s Geremy Sheaffer dove under 2007 Pennsylvania champ Steve Nederostek on a last-lap restart to claim his first career Lincoln win in the 2008 season-opener for the Central PA INEX Legends. Sheaffer started on the pole but Nederostek challenged the whole 15 laps, actually scored the leader on two occasions, including the 14th lap just before a late caution forced a green-checkered finish.

Nederostek settled for second, with Josh Morrow third, Tom Mayberry fourth, and Scott Haudeshell fifth. Completing the top ten were Greg Burd, Pat McDermott, Robert Sobieski, Rick Harrig, and Jason Harpster.

Heats for the 35 Legends were won by Robert Sobiesi, Josh Morrow and Scott Haudeshell, with Greg Burd winning the consolation.

Next Saturday night, March 29th at 6 PM, the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 410 Sprints and Thundercars will be joined by the Street Stocks. Gates for the three-division show will open at 4 PM, with hot laps get underway at 5:30 PM.
