Other "Kline’s Services Night" winners are Rochelle in Legends, Gallagher in thundercars
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 5/24/08 - Stevie Smith pulled a slider to grab the lead from Mark Smith on a 14th-lap restart and cruise to his second Lincoln win of the year in the 30-lap Keystone Cup Series feature for 410 sprint cars Saturday night.
But it was a couple of other sliders that will have the standing room only crowd talking for a long time to come. The first came as leaders Fred Rahmer and Brian Montieth banged wheels at full speed on the front stretch as the two completed lap five. Somehow, Rahmer drove out of a sure spin and hung onto second. The two had passed each other for the lead several times during the first five laps, with Rahmer scored the leader of laps one through four.
Montieth had pulled away to a comfortable lead when the red flag came out for a violent flip by Doug Esh on the backstretch. Esh crawled from the car and walked away several minutes after the crash.
But the fifth-lap contact had damaged Montieth’s wheel, and his crew spent the red flag period banging the dent out of his left rear. The crew re-filled the tire with air just before the cars pushed off, maintaining Montieth’s lead for the restart.
But it was still early. Montieth continued to lead Rahmer, Mark Smith, and Stevie Smith over the next three laps before a caution came out for a spinning Cody Darrah on turn two.
Then on the restart, Rahmer slid in front of Montieth exiting turn four of lap 10. As Montieth tried to pull back under Rahmer and reclaim the lead, he rolled up over the left rear tire of Rahmer, damaging the front end of his sprinter and collecting the J&S Fabrication #22 of fifth-place Greg Hodnett, who flipped onto the inside guardrail across from the starter’s stand. The incident also forced Rahmer to slow and regain control. Until he did, Mark Smith, Stevie Smith, and Brian Paulus were all able to get by. Brian Leppo and Josh Wells were also collected and spun on the front stretch.
Mark Smith assumed the lead when racing resumed, and he led the next four laps before Paulus pulled up lame on the backstretch of lap 14.
Stevie Smith made the race-winning pass on the restart.
"I was trying to keep my position," said Smith of the early stages of the race, adding, "I thought ‘Man, there’s a lot of excitement out here,’ and I imagine the fans liked it. It was good-lookin’ from where I was, and there was a lot of stuff going on behind me."
"We were real fortunate, had a good car, and just got the right brakes to end up here in victory lane," added Smith, "I wanted to slide up in front of Mark on that restart, but I didn’t want it to quite look as bad as the other one in the other corner. Mark’s a good racer and clear racer and I hope I gave him enough room. I tried to race nice but still win the race."
Rahmer switched second with Mark Smith several times over the second half of the race, finally getting by the N.R.G. Controls #7M on the final lap for second. Chad Layton and 20th-starting Alan Krimes completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Cory Haas, Michael Carber, Keith Kauffman, Darrah, and 23rd-starting Jim Siegel.
Heats for the "410" sprints were won by Leppo, Stevie Smith, Rahmer and Carber, with Doug Dodson winning the B-Main.
Fast time in time trials over the 34-car field was Steve Buckwalter with a one-lap time of 13.150-seconds (102.662 MPH).
Hanover’s Sam Gallagher waited for the right time to make his move in Saturday night’s 20-lap Thundercar feature. Gallagher, who started 12th, got around Neil Smith for the lead after watching Smith battle Jimmy Combs and Danny Beard for several laps. Once in front, Gallagher raced away to his first win of the year and the fifth of his career at the Pigeon Hills oval.
With the win Gallagher also extended his point lead in the battle for the track championship and became the third different winner in five races this season.
Hurricane Menges had his best race ever to finish only 1.32 seconds behind in second, with Al Crammer third, Ronnie Thomas coming from 22nd to finish fourth and Kyle Martin came from 16th to finish fifth. Completing the top-10 were 15th-starting Scott Fisher, 17th-starting Larry Neiderer, Joe Racine, 18th-starting Brad Shank and two-time winner Gino Comi.
Heats for the 27 Thundercars were won by Rick Weaver, Smith and Gallagher, with Slaybaugh winning the consolation.
Jason Rochelle received the luck of the draw, started on the pole, and claimed another Lincoln win in the 15-lap Central PA Legends feature. But he did not lead every lap. Rochelle withstood constant pressure from teammate Tom Mayberry and Geremy Sheaffer, with Mayberry actually scored the leader of lap 12.
But a lap later, Mayberry did a "360" spin exiting turn four, and dropped from the field with one lap to go. Sheaffer assumed second and finished there .66-seconds behind the winner, with Scott Haudenshell, Steve Nederostek, and Josh Morrow completing the top five.
Heats for the 35 INEX Legends were won by Jeff Condran, Nederostek, Rick Haring and Sheaffer, with Brian Weitzel and Shane Gladfelter winning consolations.
Next Saturday night, May 31st the racing action will switch to 7:30 PM starts for the remainder of the season. All three regular point divisions will be on hand - The Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 410 Sprints, the Kreizer Aluminum Wheels 358 Sprints and Thundercars.
