Aaron Eichelberger, Eric Eckert score super sportsman wins;
Gene Knaub and Bobby Beard "358" late model winners

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/5/08 - Lincoln’s all-time "358" sprint car winner added another notch to his belt by claiming the 25-lap, $2,500-to-win Wintermyer Auto Salvage feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. The purse was the largest for the 358 Sprints in Lincoln history, and Clair Wintermyer posted the $2,500 winner’s share and lined up heat sponsors for the event. Mystery Wintermyer (Clair’s wife) also added the $200 Hard-Charger Award.

Dallastown’s Cory Haas, competing at Lincoln in a "358" sprint car for the first time this year, started on the pole, followed outside front row starter Adam Wilt for the first 18 laps, and then pulled a slider on a restart to grab the race lead and take the checkered by 2.33 seconds for his 13th career Lincoln win.

But with passing points used to determine the starting lineup for the feature event, it was his key pass of Jeff Rohrbaugh in his qualifying event that put him at the front of the feature line-up when Billy Dietrich (who tallied the most heat points with 73) pulled a six pill for the inversion.

"We watched that first heat and there was a bunch of yellows and reds, and I told Mike (Barshinger) ‘I guarantee ours goes non-stop.’ If it would have, we wouldn’t have qualified in the heat. I sneaked by Jeff (Rohrbaugh) on the restart and that put us sixth in passing points for the night," said Haas in victory lane.

Only the 19th-lap slider by Haas kept Wilt from scoring his first Lincoln win.

"I just didn’t know where to be when I was running second," said Haas, "Adam Wilt took off and was running really good. I didn’t think I was going to get him. The only chance I had was to fly him down here in one and two on a restart, and it worked. Once I got clean air, it ran pretty good."

Wilt crossed second, with Lincoln points leader Gerard McIntyre, Jr. third, Billy Dietrich fourth, and Danny Dietrich fifth. The Dietrichs passed each other at least a dozen times during the feature event.

Sixth through tenth were Scott Geesey, Dale Hammaker, Glenndon Forsythe, two-time winner Aaron Ott, and Tim Berkheimer. Brian Eichelberger received the $200 hard-charger award from Mystery Wintermyer (Longaberger consultant) for advancing from 22nd starting spot to 15th at the finish.

Wilt received a $300 bonus from Wintermyer for having his finishing position pulled randomly in victory lane. Also, Dale Hammaker got a free front wing from Wings Unlimited, and winner Haas and 13th-place finisher Adrian Shaffer got a free right-read wheel from series sponsor Keizer Aluminum Wheels.

Heats for the 46 "358" Sprints were won by Nate Hammaker, Glenndon Forsythe, Tim Berkheimer, and Dale Hammaker. Twin consolations were won by Adrian Shaffer and Brad McClelland.

Langhorne’s Eric Eckert put on a record-making performance in the 25-lap super sportsman feature by leading all 25 non-stop laps en route to his second career win. By virtue of the non-stop feature, established a new 25-lap track record by completing the race in seven minutes 24.75 seconds. Also, all 24 cars that started the event finish.

Eckert started on the pole, grabbed the lead at the drop of the green, and raced away unchallenged the entire distance to take the win over third-starting Leroy Martin. Seventh-starting Scott Dellinger finished third, 10th-starting Russ Mitten was fourth and 12th-starting Rich Eichelberger was fifth.

Completing the top-10 were Ryan Rupp, Duaine Smith, Bobby Hockenberry, Derek Locke and Aaron Eichelberger.

Heats for the 37 Super Sportsman were won by Martin, Aaron Eichelberger and Rupp, with Frankie Herr winning the consolation.

Earlier in the evening, Aaron Eichelberger led all 25-laps en route to his first career super sportsman feature win in the make-up race from May 17th.

Eichelberger grabbed the lead at the outset from his outside frontrow starting position over polesitter John Garman, and the held off third-starting Stan Wanner over the final 24 laps of the 25 lap event to take the checkered 2.43 seconds ahead for the win.

Finishing third through fifth were Dave Socks, 24th-starting alternate Derek Locke and Gregg Foster. Rounding out the top-10 were Garman, Bobby Hockenberry, Leroy Martin, Duaine Smith and Russ Mitten.

Gene Knaub and Bobby Beard were winners in the "358" late model features.

Knaub won his third straight 2008 Lincoln feature in the make-up event from May 17th. Knaub started 12th and took the race lead from polesitter and race-long leader Derrick Zirkle on lap five and led the rest of the way for a 4.45-second victory. The lead was larger until Knaub lost a power steering hose on the backstretch of the final lap. John Baker got by Zirkle for second on lap 12 and finished there, with Zirkle, Mike Walls, and 17th-starting Roy Warehime, Jr. completing the top five.

In the regularly-scheduled 25-lap MALCO Landscaping championship event, Bobby Beard took the lead from Pancho Lawler and held off 12th-starting Knaub for the final 18 laps to score his first Lincoln "358" late model win by 1.64 seconds.

Bob Stough led the first three laps before losing a wheel on the backstretch and being clobbered at full speed by Tyler Hershey and Mike Walls. All three cars sustained heavy damage, but all drivers were uninjured.

Lawler assumed the lead for the restart before yielding to Beard on lap seven.

Third through fifth behind Beard and Knaub were Travis Mease, 17th-starting Travis Beaver, and Fred Harden.

Heats for the 28 "358" Late Models were won by Lawler, Bobby Beard, and Hershey, with Jake Lettich winning the consolation.
