Wagaman claims thrilling "358" late model win; Gallagher, Thomas thundercar winners

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 7/19/08 - Kevin Nagy of East Brunswick, New Jersey, didn’t have the motor to run at Selinsgrove. In fact, lately, he hasn’t had a motor at all.

So he borrowed a motor from sidelined competitor Matt Beasley and came to Lincoln. And Saturday night, it paid off.

Nagy grabbed the lead from his pole starting position, held off a furious mid-race challenge from outside frontrow starting Austin Reed, and then held off a late-race charge by 15th-starting Scott Geesey to pick up his first career Lincoln Speedway win in the 20-lap 358 sprint feature.

Nagy led Reed and sixth-starting Steve Owings from the outset and opened up a 1.57-second lead by the fifth lap. But as he closed on lapped traffic, Reed closed the gap and was side-by-side with the leader at the start/finish line at the half-way point.

A spinning Nicole Bower on the 13th lap brought out the first caution and put a clear track in front of Nagy, who continued to lead when the red came out on the 15th lap for a flipping John Barnett in turn four.

On the restart, Geesey continued his march to the front and squeezed by Reed to move into second. But Nagy was not to be denied , as he held firm out in front to take the checkered by .48-seconds to earn his inaugural win at the Pigeon Hills oval.

Reed settled for third, Owings was fourth, and 17th-starting Adrian Shaffer rounded out the top five.

Completing the top ten were Ricky Stonebraker, 22nd-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh, Jay Galloway, Billy Dietrich and Brian Eichelberger.

Heats for the 41 "358" Sprints were won by Bob Anderson, Nagy, Stonebraker, and Eric Tomecek. Twin consolations were won by Shaffer and Gerard McIntyre Jr..

A 27-time Lincoln thundercar winner, Gettysburg’s Craig Wagaman claimed his first Lincoln win in the "358" late model K.R.S. Graphics 20-lap feature event.

Wagaman started fourth and assumed the lead when race leader John Baker spun in turn two of lap three. Wagaman led the next eight laps before a sixth-starting and fast-closing Pat Beard made it a two-car battle for the top spot during laps 11 and 12. Wagaman was scored the leader of both those laps, too, but Beard took the lead on lap 13.

As Beard and Wagaman raced for the lead, Mike Walls closed and made it a three-car race on laps 14 and 15. Beard got over the cushion in turns three and four of lap 15, turning the lead back over to Wagaman, with Walls sneaking by into second. Tenth-starting Gene Knaub also closed on the leaders and got by Beard for third lap 16. Beard would reclaim third on lap 17.

After regaining the lead on lap 15, Wagaman never looked back, crossing exactly one second in front of Walls, with Beard third and Knaub fourth. Shawn Jones completed the top five, with Bobby Beard coming from the back after an early-race spin to cross sixth. Seventh through tenth were Matt Nailor, Roy Warehime, Jake Lettich, and Chad Myers.

Heats for the 28 "358" late models were won by Bobby Beard, Knaub, and Wagaman, with Travis Mease winning the consolation.

Sam Gallagher and Ronnie Thomas were winners in the thundercar features.

The first make-up feature ended with a bang when the three leaders all ended up in the third turn wall on the final lap. Second-place Brian Walls climbed onto the rear deck of leader Rick Weaver and ripped off the left side sheet metal of the #70. The two cars went into the third-turn wall, and collected third-place Larry Neiderer.

Fifth-place Gallagher then trailed Doug Bennett for the final one-lap dash to the checkered and made his winning pass in the final turns to the checkered to pick up his fourth win of 2007.

Bennett settled for second, with Greg Emlet, Jr. completing his best Lincoln run of the year in third, with Gino Comi and Brad Shank completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Al Crammer, Scott Fisher, Mike Slaybaugh, Barry Rinehart, and Justin Mong.

Ronnie Thomas took the lead from Joe Racine on lap 10 and led the rest of the way to claim his first Lincoln win in the regularly-scheduled feature. Though he led the second half of the race, Thomas had the 61M of Mike Slaybaugh on his back bumper the whole way. Slaybaugh crossed a half-carlength behind at the finish, with Gallagher third, Scott Fisher fourth, and Jimmy Combs fifth. Sixth through tenth were Danny Beard, Brad Shank, Greg Emlet, John Barnett, and Larry Neiderer.

Heats for the 27 thundercars were won by Racine, Combs and Gallagher.
