Montieth points leader with one points race to go;
Ronnie Thomas claims second ‘08 win in thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/23/08 - Cody Darrah and Doug Esh both scored their third wins of the year in the Apex Fence Twin 20's for 410 sprint cars at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

And when the final points were tallied from the two $2,500-to-win events, Brian Montieth’s sixth and third-place finishes gave the Phoenixville driver a five-point lead over Cris Eash heading into the final points race of the season next Saturday night (8/30). Also in the points hunt heading into the season points finale are 10-time track champ Fred Rahmer (45 points behind) and Niki Young (55 points behind).

Points handicapping put Darrah 11th and Rahmer 12th for the start of the first 20-lap feature. Darrah got the front first, advancing to fourth by the time the first of two cautions on the event came out for a slowing Lonnie Ryan on lap seven. Darrah drove around front row starter Pat Cooper for third on the restart, caught A.J. Michael for the runner-up spot on lap 15, and then assumed the race lead when Cory Haas, who had led every lap since lap two, got collected by the spinning cars of Craig Keel and Brian Leppo in turn two of lap 18.

It was a bad break for the three-time "358" champ who is still looking for his first career Lincoln 410 sprint win.

Two lapped cars between Darrah and second-place Rahmer gave him the cushion he needed to score the 2.80-second win. Rahmer crossed second with Michael holding on for third, Aaron Ott crossing fourth, and Niki Young fifth. Sixth through tenth were Montieth, Alan Krimes, Doug Esh, Eash, and Jim Siegel.

Darrah’s only bad move of the night was picking a "12" pill for the inversion for the second feature.

That put both he and Rahmer back on row six for the second 20-lapper.

And that proved to be disastrous for Rahmer, who spun after contact with Darrah while the two were advancing through the field in turns three and four of lap five. That sent Rahmer to the rear for the restart, and he was able to come back through the field to finish ninth.

The invert put Pat Cooper on the pole, and he led the first four laps before third-starting Jim Siegel grabbed pulled a slider in turns one and two to grab the race lead. After the Rahmer spin, Siegel pulled away to a 2.08-second lead by the end of the eight lap, and led the rest of the way until Doug Esh pulled a slider of his own to make the race-winning pass in turns one and two of lap 19.

Esh drove away to the 1.54-second win, with Siegel settling for second, Montieth coming from seventh-starting spot to cross third, Eash fourth, and Darrah completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Krimes, Chad Layton, 20th-starting Haas, Rahmer, and Young.

Esh’s win was the 20th of his Lincoln career, putting him into a three-way tie with Bud Folkenroth and Bobby Hersh for 14th on the all-time win list.

Heats for the 26 "410" Sprints were won by Cooper, Keel, and Michael, with John Rudisill winning the consolation.

Ricky Stonebraker wasn’t sure he’d make the call for his heat race in the "358" sprints, but after damaging the front end of his sprinter in warm-ups made repairs in time to win both his heat and the 20-lap feature event. It was Stonebraker’s first career sprint car win, and he credited Cory Haas for lending him front shocks to make the show.

Stonebraker started on the outside of the front row and led every lap of the race, with wild racing behind him throughout the event. Jeff Rohrbaugh, who started 12th, came through the field to edge Eric Tomecek at the finish line for second, with Bob Anderson crossing fourth and Adam Wilt fifth. Completing the top ten were Adrian Shaffer, Danny Dietrich, Brian Eichelberger, Kyle Pruitt, and Kevin Nagy.

Like the "410" sprint division, there will be a new points leader at the top for the final "358" sprint race of the year in two weeks. Scott Geesey, who entered the night as the points leader, crashed in his qualifying event and was done for the night. Billy Dietrich, who entered the night fourth in points, took a violent series of flips down the front stretch in his heat, and was also done for the night.

Rohrbaugh’s second-place finish vaulted him into the points lead by 25 point over Gerard McIntyre, Jr. with only the "358" championship event remaining on the Lincoln schedule for the division.

Heats for the 43 "358" Sprints were won by Stonebraker, Anderson, Danny Dietrich, and Tim Wagaman. Twin consolations were won by Nagy and Chad Criswell.

Gettysburg’s Ronnie Thomas started on the pole and led wire-to-wire for his second career Lincoln win in the 20-lap feature-only program for the thundercars.

Thomas held off the early challenges of Justin Mong and then points leader Sam Gallagher to score the one-second win. Brian Walls came from 15th starting spot to cross third, with Mike Slaybaugh fourth and Jimmy Combs fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Mong, Larry Neiderer, Scott Fisher, Gino Comi, and Brad Shank.

Next Saturday night, August 30th at 7 PM, the Lincoln Speedway Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 410 Sprinters will hold their final point race and conclude the season-long battle for the coveted track title. Joining them will be the Super Sportsman and 305 Sprints (which will run in a regular program plus a make-up feature from an April 26th rain out). The special Labor Day holiday racing program will also include a spectacular fireworks display. Gates will open at 5 PM, with racing action getting underway at 7 PM.
