MONTIETH CLAIMS SIXTH WIN OF ‘09 IN THRILLING WELDON STERNER MEMORIAL
Aug 8, 2009, 12:59

McClelland wins feature, Bittinger "Shootout" champ in 358 sprints;
Gallagher winner of championship event for thundercars

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/8/09 - "That guy’s an animal."

So said car owner Jerry Parrish as his driver Brian Montieth pulled into victory lane after claiming his sixth Lincoln win of the year in the Sixth Annual Weldon Sterner Memorial for "410" sprint cars Saturday night.

Lincoln’s defending champ reclaimed the points lead after winning a dual with Alan Krimes over the final laps of a thrilling 30-lap feature event.

An inversion of eight following time trials put Montieth in seventh for the start. He advanced to fifth by the end of the first lap and got by fourth-starting Aaron Ott for third on lap four. He was still running there when Aaron Ott struck the outside wall, spun, and collected Doug Esh in turn two of lap nine.

At the time, polesitter Jim Siegel had led every lap and Krimes was running second after spotting the runner-up spot to Ott for the first lap and then reclaiming second on lap two.

Siegel, Krimes, and Montieth ran first through third until lap 16, when Siegel dove low as the leaders were racing through lapped traffic in turns one and two and struck the 11C of Cory Haas, resulting in a Haas flip and a Siegel spin. Also collected in the crash were Mark Smith and Shawn Weaver, who were running fourth and fifth.

"I had a good start," said Montieth in victory lane, "Unfortunately, traffic bit Jimmy this time. I don’t know if Alan was running conservative because of where we are in points, but I learned from Cris (Eash) last year that you just go. I had nothing to lose at that point."

Krimes assumed the lead for the restart, with Montieth on his rear bumper and fast time timer and eighth-starting Brian Leppo third. Though Montieth challenged the leader several times, those three were scored first through third for the next nine laps.

The driver known as "The Edge" stayed on the cushion through the middle of turns three and four, and dove low off turn four to grab the race lead from Krimes as the leaders exited turn four to complete lap 25. Krimes came back to drive alongside the Premier Auto Works/Auto Locator/EZ Go/Bricker’s Fries #21 as the two completed lap 26, and the two passed each other several times in lapped traffic over the next two laps before Montieth finally took charge with two laps to go.

Leppo caught Krimes for second coming off the final turn to the finish, with Krimes settling for third, Cris Eash coming from 16th to finish fourth, and Josh Wells fifth.

Danny Dietrich won the Brian Brenneman Painting and Wallpapering $200 hard charger award, coming from 21st starting spot to cross sixth. Mark Smith came from the back to finish seventh, with Doug Dodson, Johnny Mackison, Jr., and Niki Young completing the top ten.

Montieth’s 15th career Lincoln win was worth $4,000, part of which came from numerous sponsors who worked with Pat Sterner and Don Althoff to organize the Sterner Memorial event.

Heats for the"410" Sprints were won by Eash, Young, and Chad Trout, with Adam Wilt winning the consolation.

Leppo collected a $200 bonus from Hanover Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep for setting fast time in time trials over the 30-car field with a one-lap time of 13.148-seconds (102.677 MPH).

Brad McClelland came from fourth starting spot to claim his second Lincoln win in the 20-lap "358" sprint feature. McClelland found some traction low in turn two on the final restart to take the lead from front row starter and race-long leader Mike Bittinger on lap 14, one lap after the final restart of the race.

Matt Boland caught Bittinger on the final turn to finish second, with Bittinger settling for third. But it wasn’t a total loss for the Pancho’s Racing Products #93. Bittinger claimed the two-night Trail-Way/Lincoln "Shootout" after winning Friday night’s race at Trail-Way.

Lincoln points leader Dale Hammaker crossed fourth, with Adrian Shaffer coming from 13th-starting spot to finish fifth. Sixth through tenth were 17th-starting Jeff Rohrbaugh, polesitter Doug Hammaker, Logan Schuchart, 18th-starting Kevin Nagy, and Derek Sell.

Heats for the 40 "358" Sprints were won by Dale Hammaker, Bittinger, Glenndon Forsythe, and Boland, with Rohrbaugh and Nagy winning twin consolations.

Sam Gallagher took home the big $500 payday in the special 25-lap championship event for the thundercars. Gallagher’s second win of the year was marred by a spectacular accident on lap 11 when then race-leader Duane Watson got on the brakes when a car slowed to a stop on the frontstretch. Watson almost stopped in time, but Will Walls, who was chasing Watson slammed full speed into the back of Watson’s car sending a plume of car fluids and steam into the air. The race was then red-flagged as Walls was complaining of arm and leg pain and was later transported to Hanover General Hospital.

Gallagher, who started fourth, grabbed the lead on the restart, only to have polesitter and lap 1 thru 9 leader get by for the lead. Gallagher was able to work his way back in front on lap 15 and led the rest of the way to pick up his second win of 2009 and close to within five points of Watson in the battle for the track championship. Gallagher’s margin of victory was .94-seconds over Gino Comi and was his 11th career win at the Pigeon Hills oval. Rick Weaver, David Prunkl, and Danny Beard finished third through fifth respectively.

Completing the top-10 were Larry Neiderer, Jimmy Combs, Jeff Wilson, Duane McMillion, and Al Crammer.

Heats for the 24 Thundercars were won by Prunkl, Comi, and Gallagher.
