"BIG BLOCK" WEAVER WINS CAREER FIRST, MONTIETH CLAIMS SECOND STRAIGHT LINCOLN TITLE;
Paul Miller takes second tour win in super sportsman;
Wagaman wins second of year in late model finale; Knaub wins second straight title
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 9/5/09 - In a racing career that began as a gopher in the shop of Van May,
Shawn "Big Block" Weaver achieved a life-long goal in winning his first sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.
"That was my goal to win," said a jubilant Weaver in victory lane, "I don’t need to win a hundred of ‘em. One is probably good enough and this’ll probably be my last race this year. I figured I’d go home on a high note and we’ll see what we do next year."
After a red flag for a flipping Josh Wells on the front stretch of the initial start, Weaver grabbed the lead at the drop of the green on the restart and led every lap, crossing .75 seconds ahead of eighth-starting and fast-closing Adam Wilt in a non-stop feature that took six minutes, 46.602 seconds.
Wilt took second from polesitter Randy Baughman in turns three and four of lap 12, and at the time was more than three seconds behind the Meadowbrook Auto Sales/Neil Smith Auto Repair/Quick Fix #69. He fell to almost five seconds behind Weaver over the next four laps before beginning his late-race charge.
But Weaver held his line as he and Wilt drove away from the field over the final five laps.
"We started up front, and then Moonie (Moon Byers) told me to make smooth laps and you’re gonna’ drive away from them, and he was right," said Weaver in the middle of one of the largest victory lane crowds in recent years, "This is very special to have Van (May) here. I learned everything I know from him. I never got my picture taken with him in victory lane when he won, but tonight he can get his picture taken with me, and I appreciate it."
There was plenty of action in behind. Two-time winner Danny Dietrich came from 16th starting spot to catch Baughman for third on the final lap, with Baughman settling for fourth and Chad Trout fifth.
Completing the top ten were 12th-starting Brian Montieth, 24th-starting Cody Darrah, 14th-starting Fred Rahmer, Alan Krimes, and Mark Smith.
Montieth’s sixth-place finish combined with Krimes’ ninth-place finish gave Montieth his second straight Lincoln Speedway track title by 25 points on a season long scale of 7-thousand points.
Heats for the 31 "410" Sprints were won by Baughman, Shawn Weaver, and Aaron Ott, with Josh Wells winning the consolation.
Fawn Grove’s Paul Miller drove by polesitter and race-long leader Lanny Hake on the 12th lap and drove away to his first Lincoln Speedway win of 2009 in the 25-lap Super Sportsman feature.
Hake led from the outset as fifth-starting Miller drove past Scott Dellinger and Steve Wilbur on the fifth lap to move into third behind Hake and outside frontrow starter Dave Berkheimer. Miller continued his charge to the front by getting by Berkheimer for second on seventh lap. Miller made his race-winning move around Hake following a 12th lap restart and pulled away over the final half of the race to earn his second Sportsman Tour race of the season.
Carmen Perigo Jr. came from 12th to finish third, with Bobby Hockenberry coming from 10th to finish fourth, and Gregg Foster came from 13th to finish fifth.
Completing the top-10 were Rich Eichelberger (started 21st), Hake, Frankie Herr (started 23rd), Ryan Rupp, Scott Dellinger, and Doug Hendricks.
Heats for the 42 Super Sportsman were won by Hake, Wilbur, Berkheimer, and Rupp. Twin consolations were won by Rick Barr and Jason Fry.
Gettysburg’s Craig Wagaman came from his ninth starting spot to pass race-long leader Travis Beaver for the lead on the fifth lap and then held off a furious charge by Gene Knaub in great side-by-side battle over the final five laps to pick up his second win of the year in the 20-lap 358 Late Model feature.
Knaub, by finishing second in their final event of 2009 at the Pigeon Hills oval, picked-up his second consecutive track championship.
Jake Lettick, Bobby Beard, and Bernie Beard finished third through fifth respectively.
Completing the top-10 were Mike Walls, Travis Beaver, Matt Nailor, Ron Little Sr., Bob Stough.
Heats for the 24 "358" Late Models were won by Mike Walls, Bernie Beard, and Jake Lettich.
