MONTIETH EDGES DEWEASE IN LINCOLN 58TH ANNIVERSARY THRILLER

Boland drives away from field in "358" sprint car feature
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 8/21/10 - Brian Montieth has made a habit of winning 410 sprint car thrillers. But his win in Saturday nightís John Gleim, Jr. Excavating Night 58th Anniversary show at Lincoln Speedway might have been his most thrilling of all.
In spectacular fashion, Montieth watched 14th-starting Lance Dewease pull a slider to briefly take the race lead in the final turns, then out-muscled the Fayetteville star off turn four to win the race to the checkered.
"Lance has been tough here when it gets dry and slick," said Montieth in victory lane, "I knew he was going to take a shot and I was just hoping I could get enough run to come down the hill and get in front of him."
Montiethís third Lincoln win of the year, his second of the weekend (Friday night at Williams Grove)a, was worth $5,800 for the special 30-lap event.
At first, it looked like Stevie Smith would be the man to beat. He started on the pole and led the first 15 laps before second-starting Montieth went to the "edge" to catch him in lapped traffic on turns three and four of lap 16. Montieth then began pulling away from the field, and had a lead of more than three seconds over Smith with five laps to go.
"Unfortunately, when youíre in traffic, second is where you want to be," said Montieth, "Stevie tried to do what he had to do to try to pass through lapped traffic. But when you run second, you can take the line the leader doesnít."
Meanwhile, Dewease was mounting his charge to the front, passing Smith for the runner-up spot with one lap to go.
While heading into turn three for the final turns to the checkered, leader Montieth clipped the slower car of Gerard McIntyre, Jr., sending McIntyre spinning and forcing Montieth into a one-lap dash to the checkered.
"Ah...lapped traffic here is really tough on us," said Montieth, "Itís so slick and thereís no too much of a bottom groove to keep momentum up, so it was just one of those deals."
McIntyre came to a stop after his spin and collected the fourth and fifth-place cars of Greg Hodnett and Daryn Pittman respectively. Pittman suffered an injury to his right arm, and transported himself to a Harrisburg hospital for treatment.
When the final lap began, Dewease stayed on Montiethís bumper up the back stretch and slid up in front of the Premier Auto Works/Auto Locator #21 through turns three and four. But Montieth prevailed down the home stretch to pick up the lucrative win, the 19th of his Lincoln career.
Dewease settled for a close second, with Smith crossing third and Alan Krimes and Tyler Walker completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were 23rd-starting Johnny Mackison, Jr., Aaron Ott, Justin Henderson, Fred Rahmer, and Brent Marks.
Heats for the 410 Sprints were won by Rahmer, Stevie Smith, Marks, and Chad Layton. Bill Stine won the consolation.
Fast time in time trials over the 31-car field was set by Krimes with a one-lap time of 13.499-seconds (100.007 MPH).
Doverís Matt Boland was the class of the field in the 20-lap "358" sprint car feature. Boland started fifth, passed polesitter and race-long leader Nick Palmerino on lap four, and raced away to his second career Lincoln win.
The only thing that kept the rest of the field close was a last-lap restart after Boland made contact with a car at the back of the lead lap in turn three of the final lap.
Billy Dietrich came from 10th-starting spot to drive under Austin Reed for second on the final restart, with Reed third.
Logan Schuchartís fourth-place finish, coupled with Dale Hammakerís failure to qualify after flipping in his heat, pulled Schuchart into a tie with Hammaker (3,505 points each) entering the final 358 point race of the year on September 11th.
Adrian Shaffer came from 12th starting spot to cross fifth, with Steve Owings (nursing a sick motor), Tim Berkheimer, Eric Tomecek, 21st-starting Tim Wagaman, and Chris Shuttlesworth completing the top ten.
Heat for the 37 "358" Sprints were won by Jan Luckenbaugh, Shuttlesworth, Boland, and Michael Ruttkamp. Twin consolations were won by Mike Bittinger and Glenndon Forsythe.
Next Saturday night, August 28th, at 7:30 PM, Lincoln Speedway will host Twin 20's for the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 sprints on Williams Grove Old Timers Night. Thundercars and the rescheduled SpeedSTERS will round out the eveningsí racing action. Gates open at 5:30 pm.
