Logan Schuchart three spots better than the Godfather to claim 2010 track title;
Neiderer wins second of career in thundercars;
Fred Cullum, Geremy Sheaffer take All-American Outlaw, Central PA Legends features

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 9/11/10 - It was a night of firsts in the "358" sprint car finale at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

And the nightís action ended with two young guns celebrating in victory lane.

One of them was Chris Shuttlesworth, who out-dueled Steve Owings to claim his first career win.

The other was Logan Schuchart, whose fourth-place finish was three spots better than Dale Hammaker, resulting in his first-ever track title.

It was a fitting 9/11 win for Shuttlesworth, who gave three years of his life to serve in the military after the terrorist attacks nine years ago.

"September 11th means a lot to me," said Shuttlesworth in victory lane, "I served three years in the United State Army because of September 11th. I just to thank my brothers and sisters who have fought for this great country. I sacrificed three years, and it hurt my racing career, but Iíd do it again tomorrow."

Shuttlesworth started on the pole and led the first 11 laps before fifth-starting Steve Owings grabbed the lead on a 12th-lap restart. Owings was scored as the leader the next six laps before Shuttlesworth reclaimed the lead on lap 18, one lap after the eventís final caution.

Shuttlesworth, driving the Jim Strausbaugh, Jr. #50, powered away to a 1.2-second win over Owings. It was Jim Stausbaugh, Jr. and Jim Strausbaugh, Sr.ís first win together as a team.

"That guy in that #35 car...Steve Owings...I havenít really raced with him very much, but heís one hell-of-a race car driver," said Shuttlesworth describing the race for the win, "He bounced off the wall down there in turn one and I did something that I preach to everyone donít follow the car in front of you. So I bounced off the wall, too. But he left me enough room to sneak on by him."

Although the race boiled down to Shuttlesworth and Owings, the race within the race was for the 2010 track championship. Logan Schuchart and Dale Hammaker entered the feature tied in season-long points.

Schuchart made the handicapped inversion through his heat and started 11th. Defending track champ Hammaker qualified through one of two consolation events and started 19th. Though he advanced to seventh at the end, Hammaker was still three spots behind Schuchartís fourth-place finish.

For Schuchart, grandson of legendary sprint car driver Bobby Allen, it was his first Lincoln track title.

"I actually thought we might get a shot at it (the win) there at the end. Everyone just kept saying ĎKeep youíre head in it; donít let the championship thing mess you up," said Schuchart upon entering victory lane to be recognized as the track champ, "I just came into it treating it like a regular race, and thatís what we had to do. This championship is great!"

John Barnett started third and raced with tenth-starting Glenndon Forsythe most of the way before finishing there. Schuchart grabbed fourth from Forsythe after the final 17th-lap restart, with Forsythe settling for fifth. Sixth through tenth were Ted Thomas, Jr., Hammaker, Tim Wagaman, 24th-starting Tim Berkheimer, and 17th-starting Brad McClelland.

Heats for the 40 "358" sprinters were won by Shuttlesworth, Mike Bittinger, Thomas, and Steve Storrie. Twin consolations were won by McClelland and Cris Eash.

Larry Niederer came for his fourth starting spot to take the lead from polesitter Justin Mong on the third lap and then held off a determined Sam Gallagher in a one-lap dash to the checkered to pick up his first win of the year in the 20-lap thundercar feature.

Mong was chased by two-time 2010 winner Will Walls early and then three-time winner Gallagher over the final laps in close-quarters racing. In the end, Niederer bested Gallagher in an exciting one-lap dash to the checkered to earn his second career win and he became the ninth different winner in 16 events in 2010.

Will Walls settled for third and Mong finished fourth.

Mike Slaybaugh came back from an early flat tire to finish fifth and unofficially took over the point lead from Gino Comi by a mere 10 points with two races remaining.

Heats for the 20 Thundercars were won by Danny Beard and Gallagher.

Geremy Sheaffer started on the outside of the front row and led all but one lap in claiming the win in the 15-lap Central PA Legends feature.

Sheaffer battled with polesitter Scott Gobrecht for the lead the first eight laps before Gobrecht drove under Sheaffer for the top spot in turns three and four of lap nine. But Gobrecht spun out in the same turns a lap later, turning the lead back over to Sheaffer, who led the rest of the way.

Chad Glatfelter started third and drove a strong race to finish second, with Lucas Montgomery coming from 15th-starting spot to finish third. Josh Morrow and Tim Bauer completed the top five.

Heats for the 29 Central PA Legends were won by Tim Henry (who dropped from the feature while running in the top five), Morrow, and Bauer, with Mark Roberts winning the consolation.

Manchester, Marylandís Fred Cullum, a Lincoln thundercar regular, came from seventh starting spot to claim the win in the 20-lap All-American Outlaw feature.

Cullum worked his way through the field and took the lead from polesitter and race-long leader Al Daniels as the pair were coming down to take the crossed flags. He led the rest of the way, with 14th-starting Randy Doty (another former Lincoln thundercar regular) coming on to finish second.

Third through fifth were Al Daniels, 15th-starting Dylan Keim, and Allan Daniels.

Heats for the 21 All-American Outlaws were won by Al Daniels, Fred Cullum, and Doty.

Next Saturday night, September 18th, at 7 PM, the Super Sportsman will race in their biggest race of the year, the 36th Annual Super Sportsman 100. The 358 Late Models will join them in their final point race of 2010 at the Pigeon Hills oval with only 65 points separating point leader Gene Knaub and Bobby Beard. Time trials get underway at 7 PM, with gates opening at 5 PM.
