Gallagher tops thundercar feature and Comi claims first track championship

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA , 10/16/10 - Greg Hodnett wasn’t coming off the top of the speedway in Saturday night’s season finale for 410 Sprint cars at Lincoln Speedway.

And if someone drove by him, Hodnett said they deserved the win.

No one got around Hodnett during the 25-lap feature as he grabbed the lead on lap one and held back three-time defending track champion Brian Montieth for his first win of the season at the track.

"Brian was running real good and was pressuring us pretty good," said Hodnett, who earned $3,000 for the Jim and Sandy Kline owned team. "I was just gonna run up top and if somebody drove by then good for them. It’s pretty much been the top all year when I’ve been here and I know when Lance (Dewease) won Speedweek he said he wasn’t getting off the top for nothing and I pretty much thought the same thing. We started towards the front in the heat and feature and we held on tonight."

Front row starters Tim Glatfelter and Brent Marks tangled on the start of the feature collecting Dewease, Gerard McIntyre and Johnny Mackison.

Hodnett, who originally started third, moved to the front row and grabbed the lead over Montieth and kept Montieth at bay during several yellow flags and two red flags during the first eight laps of the feature.

The first red flag was for Mackison, who rolled his sprinter on lap five and the second red flag displayed on lap eight when Brad McClelland and Josh Wells flipped on the backstretch. Neither driver were injured.

Montieth tried to slide Hodnett on the lap eight restart but Hodnett pulled away as Daryn Pittman, Fred Rahmer and 18th starting Brian Leppo made up the top five.

Hodnett was able to work through lapped traffic on lap 17 but on the final lap, he caught a pack of cars battling for position and nearly had one of the cars spin directly in front of him in turn one.

"I had to run hard because Brian was right there and we got up to the 48 (Danny Dietrich) and he was trying to race a guy and almost got crossed up and turned sideways in front of us," stated Hodnett after his 23rd career Lincoln feature win. "Luckily we got off the gas and we weren’t too tight and rolled around there. But I was figuring Brian would give us a good shot in turn three and four but I never saw him so I guess we were able to get down the backstretch pretty good."

Hodnett, of Thomasville, also the 2010 Williams Grove Speedway track champion scored the win over Montieth, of Phoenixvlle, Owasso, Oklahoma’s Pittman, Salfordville’s Pittman and New Oxford’s Leppo with Mark Smith, Justin Henderson, Cory Haas, Chad Layton and Alan Krimes.

Heats for the 28 "410" Sprints were won by Fred Rahmer, Jim Siegel and Doug Dodson with Danny Dietrich winning the consolation.

Four different leaders ran out front of the season finale for the thundercars as Sam Gallagher came from 12th starting spot to take control on lap 16 and scored his fifth win of the season.

While Gallagher was leading, Gino Comi and Mike Slaybaugh were battling for the track championship both one lap down to the leaders after some early race problems.

Comi finished 11th and claimed his first career Lincoln title.

Hurricane Menges led the first two laps as Kyle Martin led the next three laps before yielding to Duane Watson.

Watson led until lap 16 then Gallagher took the lead and drove to the win over Watson, Travis Beaver, Allan Cullum and Tom Walls.

Danny Beard and Duane Watson were heat race winners for the 20 thundercars.

The Lincoln Speedway Race Car Flea Market is up next on the schedule on Saturday, November 13 from 7am until 2pm at the speedway.

Then, the countdown begins for the 2011 season opener scheduled for Saturday, February 26, 2011 with the Icebreaker 30 for 410 Sprints.
